Joseph Sobran, on the Glories of Educational Progress

Re-printed by Nicholas Stix

“In 100 years we have gone from teaching Latin and Greek in high school to teaching Remedial English in college.”

N.S. note: I spent six years teaching remedial English in college (1992-1998).

Has anyone ever seen the entrance exam for Harvard as it was one-hundred fifty years ago? You needed to have done some serious studying at a high level to pass that test.

Just to graduate from grammar school in some states not that long ago you had to pass a proficiency test that was rather rigorous and could not be hardly passed by most college students today.
