actor Richard Roundtree dead at 81; he starred in the shaft blaxploitation movies

By N.S.

"Richard Roundtree, iconic star of Shaft, dead at 81"

"the Shaft star was a pioneer for other black filmmakers and performers.

I commented: "Iconic"? "Pioneer"? Gimme a break! And people say the post is a "conservative" paper? You're racially pandering like the times. Then again, the term "conservative" has become meaningless.

Never saw "Shaft",but the song was everywhere.Eclectic music on the radio in those days.You'd have Charlie Rich,The Doors,Bread,Stones,Beatles(as soloists),Supremes("Stoned Love"--their best song--without Diana Ross,no less)Cat Stevens,"Theme from M*A*S*H" etc.All memorable.

Theme from Shaft was written by the late Isaac Hayes. He wrote many great songs as a studio songwriter for Sam and Dave like Soul Man and Hold on I'm Coming. I remember a story about how he came up with the idea for Hold on I'm Coming. He was sitting in the john doing his business when somebody opened the door and told him he was needed in the studio so he yelled out: "Hold on, I'm Coming". Then the song came to him. I'm not really a fan of Hayes solo work but thought that was an amusing story.

Sung to "Shaft"

Who's the nig the press applauds for going after all White broads(right on)

Who's the black that always said,no negresses would he wed(damn right).

Who's the spade, who found out soon,a kid with a White is still a coon?(Can you dig it?--dumba*s Roundtree)
