Personalities of the three snubbed had to be part of it.Jolly Ortiz was described as gregarious and friendly with the press.Being White doesn't help.

The six-time All-Star’s candidacy has been affected by hateful comments he has made about transgender people, Muslims and blacks and by supporting the rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

LOL

Since it's America 2.0, it's only appropriate that we let a woman tell us why Schilling does not belong in the HOF -- even better, a 'proud Jewish woman' (don't take my word for it, check her Twitter account):

Former Phillies star absolutely should NOT be in the Hall of Fame

He’s been collecting “World War II memorabilia,” which is really just a lot of Nazi uniforms and other swastika-emblazoned pieces. ... ESPN removed him from the Little League World Series broadcast after he compared Muslims to Nazis on Twitter. ... He was then fired from ESPN after he reposted a transphobic meme on Facebook about bathroom rights and doubled down with an extremely insensitive comment of his own ...

Blah blah etc etc -- it was a rather slippery slope from tolerating gay marriage to not being allowed to say anything 'insensitive' about trannies -- and it appears 'bathroom rights' are now a thing.

To his credit, Schilling reportedly said: 'If I have to shut up to get in the Hall of Fame, then I don’t want in.'

I stopped following baseball decades ago, so I have no opinion re whether Schilling should be on the HOF on baseball merit -- it should not be that difficult to compare his career stats to other pitchers who are in/out to get an idea.

Let's check-in with another Jewish sportswriter (link):

It’s atrocious Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens aren’t in Baseball Hall of Fame

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but in the sense of basic fairness it seems odd to me to be so adamant about Bonds (I'm less familiar with Clemens, since I was living in the SFBA at the time Bonds played for the Giants), who's probably the most obvious beneficiary of steroid use (or drugs cheat if you prefer) in the history of baseball -- here is a before/after composite foto showing how Bonds was able to develop his body (which requires hard work of course) by taking steroids: link

I honestly don't see how anyone can defend that.
