My grade school classmates were the Mudd sisters.

They were lineal descendants of Dr. Samuel Mudd.

Dr. Mudd set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth.

Booth stayed at the Mary Surratt house after assassinating Lincoln.

The Mary Surratt house was located a block from the grade school I attended in Southern Maryland.

Neither sister ever displayed the Confederate flag. In fact, every morning the Roman Catholic nuns at the school would make all of us students – blacks and whites alike – stand at attention, face the American flag in the classroom, place our right hands over our hearts, and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

All of us stood, including the Mudd sisters.

No one called them out. No one mocked them nor called them racists or traitors.

This whole “white supremacist” and anti-Confederate hysteria has been manufactured.
