I know a Chinese man who selected the English name of "Dick." He asked me if "Dick" means something else because a lot of people smiled when he told them his name. I told him what it meant in American slang. An old lady where he worked refused to say his name over the intercom. Subsequently he changed his name to "Richard."I showed my ethnic Chinese wife the video of the stupid newswoman reading the fake names of the pilots. She laughed. The professor was right to warn the girl that her name might offend people--or make them laugh. But when she didn't want to change it, he should have simply said, "That is your right." And she should have simply said she preferred her original name. But now everyone has to get offended and claim discrimination. I remember when people told ethnic jokes about their own ethnicity. I worked with a Hispanic man from Espanola--a notoriously rough Hispanic town in New Mexico--there are many outrageous Espanola jokes--which are now outlawed in nearby Los Alamos. Anyway, this guy had a print of the famous painting "Hogs Killing a Rattlesnake" on the wall behind his desk--only he had labeled it "Espanola Saturday Night." People should stop being so thin-skinned and laugh--everyone would be happier.
