I used to live in Las Cruces. Auto theft was big--especially Ford pickup trucks. They used to say that 45 minutes after a theft the truck was in Mexico. Some of the stolen vehicles were found to be driven by Mexican police. Southern New Mexico is more Mexican than the Hispanic northern part. The Apaches kept Mexicans from settling in southern New Mexico--they all went north to Santa Fe and further north. But after the Americans defeated the Apaches, the Mexicans poured over the border. The Hispanics in the north get really angry if you call them "Mexicans"--they claim to be descended from the original Conquestadors--and many are.
