Joy of Shooting | Official Trailer

By “W”

N.S.: This is a video by an attractive, shapely young lady who likes to shoot all sorts of weapons, even slingshots.

I’m not a gun guy, but I get around, and several years ago, my chief of research had me watching lots of gun videos.

Several men commenting on the following video referred wistfully to “Gunny.”

I know enough that the term means Marine Corps gunnery sergeant, a title that exists only in the USMC. But the commenters were referring to a very special “Gunny.”

Usually, when a marine refers to “Gunny,” he’s speaking of the man who terrorized him in boot camp, so that he might survive combat, and bring honor upon the Marines and his country. There’s probably a few million old marines like that.

But these guys weren’t reminiscing about their military service. I had a hunch whom they were recalling. There’s one man who, long before he died last year, was honored with the unofficial title of “America’s Gunny,” and was revered by millions, most of whom had never been marines, except in their hearts.

“Gunny.”

There was once an "attractive, shapely" gal who did all kinds of incredible trick shots and only missed on purpose to add suspense. She lived a long time ago: Annie Oakley. Today's kids don't know any history so they probably never heard of her. As a little girl Annie endured horrible abuse by foster parents she called "the wolves." Her mother had been too poor to support her, but Annie ran away from "the wolves" and set out in the forest with a gun. She was so successful as a commercial hunter that she saved her family's farm. One day a professional shooter came to town and people put this young girl up against him in a shooting contest. She won--and soon he married her. And when she proved better than him, he became her assistant. Annie Oakley became world famous and taught thousands of women how to shoot. She was a great and inspirational American who should not be forgotten.
