(KPVI)ST. LOUIS — The University City Police Department said the search for a missing delivery driver ended with officers finding his body in the Central West End.
Jamaal Lamonte Jones, 27, was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and felony evidence tampering.
In a news release, the University City Police Department said 23-year-old Jardyn Walker was supposed to meet his sister at the Amazon Hazelwood plant for a ride home, but never showed up. She called the University City Police Department to report him missing on Tuesday because he was last seen in University City.
St. Louis police spokesman Mitch McCoy said St. Louis officers were requested to help around 1 a.m.
The victim's phone was pinging in the 4200 block of Washington Avenue. When officers arrived, they found his vehicle and a man dead from gunshot wounds in an alley near the intersection of Olive and Whittier.
The man was later confirmed to be Walker.
Police later connected his death to a shots fired incident at around 8:45 Tuesday night. Officers responding to that call spotted a car speeding away from the scene. They were able to stop the car a half mile away at Boyle and Lindell, and saw Jones in the passenger seat with an assault rifle between his legs.
Charging documents say officers also found shell casings in Jones’ pocket during a search following his arrest. Prosecutors say Jones admitted to firing the assault rifle.
Jones admitted to firing the weapon and made a statement about being "in fear of his life," according to court documents, but police didn't know at that time that a person had been shot.
Homicide detectives detained Jones' brother Wednesday morning in connection with the shots-fired call, the probable cause statement said. During questioning, he admitted that Walker and Jones had both been at his apartment that evening. As Walker was leaving, the brother, who was sitting in his bedroom, said he heard gunshots and went out to the living room, but no one was there.
A short time later, Jones ran back into the apartment holding an assault rifle and then left the scene in his sister's car, which was stopped by police.
Police said Walker was on the job as a delivery driver Tuesday, but had made a personal stop at the apartment when the shooting occurred.
McCoy said, “That person on his job made a stop in that area… to somebody that we believe he knows… and at some point possible shots were fired.”

Now there's a "classic" movie [Diabolique] I just don't like-saw it long ago, and again more recently, and had the same reaction. It was certainly influential, though, imitated a lot- and Joe Stefano did a takeoff on it for The Outer Limits, "The Forms of Things Unknown," originally shot as a pilot for a new series called "The Unknown"- psychological horror instead of sci-fi.
The restored version, which I assume TCM is showing, features an oddity-the subtitles include adolescent boys using the "f" word, which I doubt was in the original- even though European films were more lenient than American films regarding language and nudity, I'm pretty sure that would NOT have been allowed in the 50s! That happens from time to time with new editions of older foreign films, and it's really annoying and jarring-I saw a samurai epic once where one character says to another, "You effin' retard!" NOT authentic 17th-century patois!
