Don Malarkey: Lest We Forget

"born in 1921 in Oregon, Don Malarkey was an athlete, a dreamer, a kid with his whole life ahead of him.

"then Pearl Harbor happened. He joined the Army Airborne and became part of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

"on June 6, 1944, he parachuted into Normandy in complete darkness. Bullets tore through the sky. Planes exploded. Men died before they hit the ground. Don landed, found his rifle, and fought.

"With the 101st, he fought through France, the Netherlands and the frozen nightmare of Bastogne, where temperatures dropped below zero and German forces surrounded them.

"By the time Germany surrendered in 1945, Don was 23 years old. He felt 100. Then the war ended, and he came home.

"No parade waited for him. No counseling. No one to talk to about the faces he still saw every night. He got a job, started a family and lived a quiet life. He passed away in 2017, finally recognized, but never fully healed."
