“Russell was driving home from work thursday night when she called 911 at 9:34 p.m. to say that she saw a male toddler in a diaper walking alone along the side of the interstate on i-459 south, roughly eight miles south of birmingham.
“police have been unable to confirm whether there was a child on the highway. “‘Carlee’s 911 call remains the only timely report of a child on the interstate,’ Hoover police said in a statement.
“The dispatcher told Russell to stay with the child until police arrived, her mother, Talitha Russell, told the new york times.
“immediately after, Russell called her brother’s girlfriend to share what she saw. Russell stayed on the phone with the girlfriend as she got out of her car to check on the child and called out to him. sometime after 9:36 p.m., the relative [sic] heard what sounded like Russell screaming and the phone drop to the ground, Talitha Russell said.
“‘my son’s girlfriend heard her asking the child, “Are you OK?” She never heard the child say anything but then she heard our daughter scream,’ Talitha said to al.com. “From there, all you hear on her phone is background noise from the interstate.”
“police officers responded to the scene within five minutes of Russell's 911 call and found her car abandoned on the side of the interstate. They also located Russell’s wig, cell phone and purse on the roadway near the vehicle and her apple watch was in her purse. however, they were ‘unable to find her or a child in the area,’ police said in a statement.
“However, a single witness has reported spotting a ‘light complected male’ standing outside of Russell’s car. According to police, there is no further information available about that person.
“police did obtain video surveillance footage of the interstate that shows the moment when Russell pulled over her red Mercedes-Benz and slowly drove forward with her headlights flashing. the footage is grainy and doesn’t depict anyone else pulling their car over after Russell and before the police showed up. However, they are working to clarify the footage, police said.”
GRA: How could she see a child at night, going highway speed, and have enough time to pull off the road at the same exact spot as the kid supposedly was, without causing an accident?
Sounds like a rendezvous to me.

She was on her way home from her job at the Woodhouse Day Spa in the Summit, stopped to get food at The Colonnade and was about 10 minutes from her house, according to her parents, Talitha and Carlos Russell
Carlee Russell then stopped to check on the child and called a family member, according to police. The family told investigators that they lost contact with her, but the phone line remained open.
When police arrived, they found Carlee Russell's car and belongings, but there was no sign of her or a toddler.
Police have not been able to locate anyone with Carlee Russell from the time she left where she picked up food to the time she made the 911 phone call.

What are the odds of someone stopping on a highway for a toddler,that no one else saw,then disappearing for 2 days and finally,WALKING back to her home?If she was kidnapped,why would the kidnappers let her go after only 2 days--or at all--without killing her?

Alabama police have not found any evidence to back up the claim of a child wandering along I-459 the night Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russell, 25, mysteriously vanished after she called 911, according to newly released details.
“The Hoover Police Department has not located any evidence of a toddler walking down the interstate, nor did we receive any additional calls about a toddler walking down the interstate, despite numerous vehicles passing through that area as depicted by the traffic camera surveillance video,” according to the press release sent out Tuesday night.

Surveillance footage from her work at the spa shows that she concealed a bathrobe and toilet paper when she left, and neither were in the car after she went missing.

When she called 911, data tracked her driving 600 yards while she said she was allegedly following the toddler along the interstate, according to Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis. That is the distance of six football fields.
No child has been reported missing at this time in Hoover, Derzis said.
Traffic camera footage has been sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for enhancement and has not yet been returned.
