This one took place 10 months ago after which the usual news blackout was imposed. Now comes the announcement that the death penalty will be "sought." No trial date is set. Surprise, surprise.
A year or two from now (probably two) a trial will take place with local coverage only. Maybe a guilty verdict with "Life Without Parole."
Pretty much meaningless today. It just significantly increases the expense of a trial. Guaranteed appeals. Even if convicted and sentenced to death, he'll likely spend at least 20 years on death row.

A fairly recent exception was Tim McVeigh. Sentenced to death in 1997, executed just 4 yrs later in 2001. Interesting.
That is usually the case. Murder with aggravating circumstances. Rape in this instance.

Defense argument will be they met on the jogging trail, she couldn't resist his charm and they had a quickie in the bushes, he stepped away to take a leak and smoke a cigarette and a White guy came out of nowhere and raped her then killed her. Negro couldn't hear the crime because he put his iPod on and it drowned out the noise, otherwise he would have saved her life. White guy didn't leave any dna because he wore a condom and a hasmat suit. Only reason he is being persecuted is because he's black, kinda like the guy in To kill a Mockingbird.
I call it the Rudy Guede, with a dash of CP5, defense.
