On Friday morning at 8 a.m. ET, TCM broadcasts Howard Hawks’ Pride of the Marines (1945) with John Garfield and Eleanor Parker. Garfield plays Marine Guadalcanal hero Al Schmid, one of Garfield’s best roles, and one he wanted to do.

Right before Pride of the Marines, at 6 a.m. ET, TCM shows God is My Co-Pilot (1945) based on Robert Scott’s book on becoming a member of Claire Chennault’s Flying Tigers. I used to see this one on the 4 o’clock movie after school.

The most striking thing in PRIDE OF THE MARINES is a frightening nightmare scene involving blindness, devised by Warners' montage unit (I looked up the credits and couldn't find any indication of who actually created the scene). Was surprised to learn that Albert Maltz, of the infamous Hollywood Ten, co-writer of the classic NAKED CITY, was the screenwriter. Here's his bio (You'll enjoy this- John Wayne and Ward Bond get into the act!):

Of Karl Marx, he says, "...the noblest set of ideals ever penned by man..." which was going to end "...exploitation of women by men, the exploitation of people of colour by white peoples, the exploitation of colonial countries by imperialist countries..."
Three "ideals" that destroyed Civilization As We Knew It.
