no one is coming to save you

A Colleague:

Trump's supporters seem increasingly inclined to back Trump unreservedly, i.e., make a cult around him,
instead of supporting him as a remedy for their various discontents.

The way Trump's going, he could suddenly out-Biden Biden by making an extravagant gesture to abolish the border, to the rapture of MAGA land.

No One is Coming to Save You

Pedro is a very careful reviewer of Trump and the gop. I appreciate the clarity he brings to what is going on.

"hard truths and the killing of Julian Wood."

Jun 11

"I get hate in some fashion almost every time I tweet or write something critical of the new GOP these days. that is why most people will do the easy thing and refrain from rocking the boat. that's why even the most radical voices stay in their happy lanes, reserving their arrows for soft and easy targets.
"but I can tell you in a name why it's worth it to me to never shut up: Julian Wood.
"Wood was a three-year-old boy who was stabbed to death while sitting in a shopping cart at a supermarket in north Olmsted, ohio. north Olmsted is a suburb of cleveland where I take my wife and kids on occasion. My son is three years old and reminds me of Julian.
"Ellis obtained [N.S.: stole] a kitchen knife from the volunteers of america thrift store and, after spotting Julian and his mother, Margot Wood, stalked them out of a giant eagle and into a parking lot. as Margot prepared to load groceries into her vehicle, Ellis charged them with the knife and stabbed Julian twice. Margot tried to protect her son and was wounded in the act. the attack lasted less than five seconds before Ellis walked away. five seconds for a lifetime of heartache.
"Margot survived with a stab wound to her shoulder. Julian died at a hospital.
"police called it a random act of violence. Ellis and the Margot family had never interacted before she targeted them. Ellis is black, and Julian was white.
"at the time of the attack, Ellis had a probation violation warrant for a misdemeanor theft charge. her rap sheet stretches back to Kern county, california, where Ellis was accused of three counts of "battery on person."
"how she wound up in ohio is unclear. but an investigation by the Fox 8 i-team found that in february, an official at a shelter called cleveland police saying that Ellis wanted to confess to a murder.

"'Bionca then went and explained that sometime in the last few months that she murdered someone in bakersfield, california,' a report reviewed by the Fox 8 i-team states.

"Ellis highlighted that her alleged victim was White.

"'She states the victim was a White female, approx. 5'6", 150 pounds, and that she was a bartender or worked at a bar.

"whether Ellis actually killed before now is yet unknown. but even fantasies of murdering White people could suggest that Julian's killing wasn't entirely random.

"in court, Ellis smiled and giggled as the charges were read to her. Julian's father, Jared Wood, entered the room and a delivered a statement, fighting back tears.
[N.S.: She's playing the crazy card.]

"'She took everything from us,' Jared said. 'there's nothing that could ever replace my son or anything that my wife and I or even our other kids are going through and it's horrendous.' Ellis was unmoved, utterly without remorse.

"shortly after Julian was killed, florida republican Byron Donalds appeared on msnbc to defend Donald Trump's record and policies. Donalds is on Trump's shortlist for vice president.
"Donalds attacked the tough-on-crime 1994 Crime Bill as 'devastating to black communities,' while praising the first step act, signed by Donald Trump in 2018, which enabled violent criminals and sex offenders to get out of jail sooner. it continues to benefit the worst kind of offenders, people who are no different than Bionca Ellis.
"the first step act was the fruit of the Koch network's influence in the Trump administration, which viciously suppressed republican opposition to the bill. the campaign to see it made into law elevated people like Van Jones to the white house and marked the triumph of an assault on law and order.
"in red state blues, political scientist Matt Grossman illustrated how republican victories have done little to reverse democratic advances. Grossman specifically highlighted Trump's surrender on criminal justice as one such example:
"despite Trump being elected partially on 'law and order' rhetoric, there has been no republican return to tough-on-crime policies. innovative reforming states such as oklahoma, Georgia, and texas are continuing without interruption along their path, despite visible evidence that many republican voters support the old approach. even the federal government has now joined the states in bipartisan criminal justice reform.
"Grossman published that book in 2019. the delusion of criminal justice reform should have died in the fires of the George Floyd riots the following year. it didn't. instead, the Trump administration proposed 'diversity training' for police in 2020. and now, even as the gop hammers the message that Joe Biden is soft on crime, Trump and the republican party continue touting the first step act, arguably the most consequential liberal piece of federal crime legislation in recent memory.
"there is no national law and order party in America. no party in this country avenges on behalf of people like Julian Wood. democrats are quite content climbing into bed with crime and criminals. republicans, meanwhile, are desperately pandering in ways more shameless than ever. that development has also been accompanied by the rise of "maga rap" and Trump allies' embrace of the genre and the gutter culture it promotes.
"you're supposed to look away or downplay all of this if you're on 'the right.' however, there is no real right-wing movement. yes, there are people making right-wing sounds, attending gatherings of alleged import in conference halls and basements, theorizing right-wing-sounding theories and wishcasting right-wing visions, but there is no real vehicle for a real right with the gop as it is currently constituted and helmed. on some level, most people know this. they know that the movement is just an entertainment industry and cocktail circuit, not much more.
"there are vanishingly few exceptions to this rule, and there's only one way to get disinvited: point out that it's all fake, that the 'new' and 'populist' gop is just as awful as the one it replaced, that the American right has become a freakshow infected by profound omphaloskepsis and cannot even take a hard stance on whether policy should be made for people like Bionca Ellis or Julian Wood.
"what does all of that mean for you? it means that no one is coming to save you; you have to save yourself, your family, your friends—and you have to do it where you call home, rather than waiting for a national cavalry. no Caesar is coming over the rubicon. there is no man on horseback. you have to take the saddle and reins yourself."
