"world exclusive: russian insider Viktor Bout warns nuclear war is imminent"

I remember reading my late mother's US News & World Report magazines. Very sober-minded reading in the 1960s.

This was when I was a pre-teen growing up in the southern suburbs of Washington, D.C. My parents' house was about 6 blocks south of Andrews AFB, home to Air Force One.

The magazine would have articles about the possibility of Soviet nuclear missiles striking targets in and around Washington, D.C., and the odds of surviving such strikes. Obviously, the farther removed from ground zero the higher the odds of surviving such strikes.

What I remember most of all is the drawings of the fallout zones.

They were like a melted Dali version of a dartboard. The elongated downwind blast zones blended together like so many elliptical Venn diagrams.

Living eight miles south of the city gave us less than 15 minutes to seek shelter if a Soviet ICBM were to strike the Pentagon across the Potomac River.

Heck, my late Aunt Marie lived mere feet from a Nike missile in nearby Northern Virginia.

Her home was less than 100 feet away from the intersection of Popes Head Road and the Fairfax County Parkway.

It's crazy to think about 55-year-old magazine articles.

And realize that the past is the here and now.

Nuts.

N.S.: Except that we were governed by much more responsible, intelligent men then.

What does nuclear war really mean? The Russians launching missiles at all our major cities? Against European countries that have been contributing aid to the Ukraine? Strikes against targets in Ukraine? Does that last one even make sense? Ukraine has a 10th the military capability of Russia, they have 300 military aircaft, Russia has 3,000 along with heavy hombers. If Russia wanted to obliterate Ukranian cities they'd just unleash the bombers. They've carved out that corridor to the Black Sea and Crimea and seem to be holding there. Why detonate nuclear bombs that would spread radiation into Russia? Missiles launched against western countries would result in retaliation that would be catastrophic for the entire world. There will be no winners, it's mutual suicide.

Trump has been vague and sometimes contradictory regarding the war but has said the the war must end:

Washington Post has reported he has a secret plan to end the war:

He's been accused of not being supportive toward the Ukraine and apologizing for Russian aggression by Republicans as well as Democrats. Could it be his lack of enthusiasm makes the war profiteers so nervous that they will stop at nothing to keep him from being elected?

Dig a hole in the ground. Place a metal garbage can in the hole. Pull the lid of the opening of garbage can after you jump inside. Wait for the bang.
