Gannett’s topeka capital journal and the topeka police throw their nominees in the ring for the least informative/most puffed-up press releases this month

By Nicholas Stix

A man murdered his wife or daughter and committed suicide, but the McRag acts as if it were a coincidence that they both have the same last name.

And after refusing to give us the most basic information, McRag operative Tim Hrenchir pads out his “thing” with trivia about the exact situation of the block where Herring killed his kin. If Hrenchir is so intimately acquainted with the lay of the land, why didn’t he go out to the 2200 block of s.w. Wilmington court, and ask the next-door neighbors what Jason and Katelynn Herring’s relationship was? Otherwise, the headline may as well have been, “somebody killed someone, and then killed itself,” by Ilhan Omar.

As for the topeka pd, if as they say, “there is no threat to the public,” then there is no excuse for them to withhold all information beyond the decedents’ names and ages. Like so many other pds, Chief Bryan Wheeles 785-368-9277 · chiefsoffice@topeka.org is clearly seeking to get the public accustomed to a low-information diet.

“two people were found deceased late thursday after topeka police were called to a shooting scene in the area of s.w. 8th and MacVicar avenue.

“the deaths of Katelynn M. Herring, 25, of Topeka, and Jason M. Herring, 44, of topeka, are being investigated as a homicide/suicide, said topeka police lt. Ed Stanley.

“police weren’t saying how the two may have been related or revealing who they think shot whom.

“all involved parties have been located and there is no threat to the public,’ said police lt. Donna Eubanks. ‘the investigation is ongoing at this time.’”

“officers were called just after 8 p.m. to the scene in the 2200 block of s.w. Wilmington court, Eubanks said.

“that block runs east and west and is located one block north of s.w. 8th street and three to four blocks east of s.w. MacVicar.”

How many brother/sisters--19 years apart--live together and then do a murder/suicide? Zero.

I'd hazard a guess and say April/September romances are more likely to have such a horrific end--especially if the young wife wants to leave.
