“Free, white, and 21”! Sensational! Catch It before the Censors Do! Julie Garfinkle! (John Garfield) Ida Lupino! Thomas Mitchell! Eddie Albert! John “Muley” Qualen! in Anatole Litvak’s Out of the Fog (1941), TCM’s Film Noir of the Week Saturday Night-Sunday Morning at Midnight and 10 a.m. ET

TCM’s Film Noir of the Week Saturday Night-Sunday Morning at Midnight and 10 a.m. ET is Anatole Litvak’s Out of the Fog (1941) with John Garfield, Ida Lupino, Thomas Mitchell, Eddie Albert and John Qualen.

Film Noir Guide: “Garfield is sensational as an ambitious New York hood, a sociopath with no redeeming qualities, operating a small protection racket along the piers of Brooklyn. Switchboard operator Lupino, tired of being ‘ordinary,’ falls for the flashy hood and plans to run off to Cuba with him even though she knows he’s been terrorizing her father (Mitchell) and his fishing partner (Qualen).”

“Albert is Lupino’s uninteresting boyfriend, whom she drops when Garfield shows up flashing his smile and his wallet. Mitchell and Qualen bring charges against Garfield but plot their own unique revenge after losing in court.

“The acting is exceptional, with Garfield taking top honors in this early noir entry. Leo Gorcey (Slip Mahoney of the Bowery Boys films) plays a bartender, and Bernard Gorcey (Leo’s real-life pop, who played Louie Dumbrowski in the same series) is a card-playing customer.”

David in TN: Film Noir Guide identifies a memorable Noir Moment where sensitivity training is required when “Garfield tells Mitchell and Albert that ‘Lupino is free, white and 21, and makes her own decisions.’”

TCM's Film Noir of the Week Saturday Night-Sunday Morning at Midnight And 10 a.m. ET is Anthony Mann's Two O'Clock Courage (1945) with Tom Conway, Ann Rutherford, Richard Lane, Lester Mathers, Emory Parnell, Jane Greer.

Film Noir Guide: "Conway plays an amnesiac who may or may not have killed a noted Broadway producer. He teams up with a helpful cabbie (Rutherford) in an effort to discover his real identity and to find out if he's the killer the cops are hunting. Mathews is Conway's playwright friend, Lane plays an idiotic reporter, and Parnell is an equally idiotic homicide detective."

"The film's feeble attempts at humor fail miserably. The only thing noteworthy about this remake of 1936's Two in the Dark is that it marked the screen debut of Jane Greer, who was billed under her real name, Bettejane Greer."

David In TN: Amnesia type noir, 66 minutes long. Conway was actor George Sanders' older brother, died broke in 1967 of heavy drinking.
