Tomorrow (Sunday) is Paul Newman Day on TCM’s Summer Under the Stars. The best known Newman films are to be shown, but there is one of interest not on TCM very often.
John Huston’s The Mackintosh Man (1973) Sunday Night-Early Monday Morning at 12:15 a.m. ET is called a “Cold War Thriller.” Paul Newman plays a British agent who infiltrates a secret organization breaking out prison inmates. The plot is loosely based on the 1966 escape of George Blake, a traitor who had been working as a mole within British intelligence. Another plot point is the Cambridge spies.
Harry Andrews, Dominique Sanda, and James Mason also star. I once read that The Mackintosh Man is a favorite among real-life agents. The best thing, along with the location-shooting atmosphere, is the ending, which will delight Anti-Communists.
