The conventional wisdom is that the fire did not melt the steel but weakened it. Structure to make the building cost efficient with regard to floor space used "innovative" design that RELIED on adequate strength and reliant strictly on the ability to withstand an impact from a jet airliner and not impact and fire. That use of cross-country wide body jets doing flight fully fueled has always indicated to me that some higher level of intelligence other than Osama was in on the planning stage.
