F-16s are vulnerable to modern portable AA systems, which are now pretty good. Russia also has S-400 systems, perhaps the best AA in the world, and many of those missiles have a range of more than 100 miles. The Russians have already shown their weapons technology is as good as anything NATO has, although via the US NATO probably has better strategic intelligence.
The F-16 is really an air superiority plane, not a ground attack plane. How is that going to help Ukraine? It looks like it can fire missiles that home in on radar, so it can probably be used to attack any Russian equipment using radar.
Seems the F-16s will have to be used mostly as standoff launch platforms, otherwise losses could be high if it's used to hunt Russian aircraft in airspace covered by Russian AA systems. The Russians have air superiority planes too.
Pilot training is one thing. But maintenance of the F-16 must be constant and requires a lot of expertise. Putin has already warned NATO about formally delivering the F-16 to Ukraine, using it for combat operations there, then maintaining it on NATO soil, for example in Poland or Romania.
The Dutch are giving EVERY F-16 they have to the Ukrainian? Madness.
And the Australian is planning to give the Ukrainian EVERY F-18 they have?
Giving away all their national defense. Madness.
