I saw Rich in front of a Burger King last week.It LOOKED like he was in a costume,dressed up as a 6 foot tall,skinny, burnt french fry,but no,it was just him--regular clothes--trying to drum up business for the place--at minimum wage. He was waving his arms,jumping up and down,saying the "f" word to cars who didn't pull in the lot.
I stopped,got a couple Whopper Jrs and walked over to him,I said,"Aren't you Richard Pryor?"
"Yeah man,did you buy anything?"
I showed him the burgers.
"That's good," he said,"cuz I get 1 percent of the profit of all the burgers sold between 2 and 4 p.m."
"What are you doing here in Grand Rapids,"I asked cautiously.
"Is that where I'm at?"he said,as he looked around,"I thought this was the south side of Chicago."
"Not yet,"I said--"close."
"Well,as you see,since my second accident with freebasing about 4 years ago,I make the perfect crispy french fry and I need the dough to buy some stuff from a White guy I know--H.B."
I nodded,figuring immediately who H.B. was.I was going to ask him something else,but he said he had to go inside for his break,so I got his autograph and wished him luck at his job.
The next day,he was gone--never saw him again.But I DID see--about a week later,for one day--a guy who looked like Bill Cosby--giving out free coffee to young females.
True story.
