The St. Francis school district in milwaukee county, wisconsin, has the wrong Deborah Kerr for its superintendent. This Deborah Kerr attempted to cover up a scandal at one of the schools she runs. A teenager in the district had accused St. Francis junior varsity baseball coach Jeff Wuerl of sexually assaulting her, beginning when she was under ten years old. Wuerl has since been arrested and fired.
When tmj4 reporter Megan Lee sought to record the first public school board meeting, on june 2, after coach Wuerl’s arrest, superintendent Wrong Deborah Kerr threatened to call the police on her, if she didn’t leave. As Megan Lee pointed out to her, Wrong Deborah Kerr was in violation of wisconsin’s open meetings law. Lee left anyway (I wish she hadn’t.) When tmj4 initiated legal action against the St. Francis school district, Wrong Deborah Kerr wrote a phony, Clintonesque letter of apology (surely under advice of legal counsel), in the passive voice:
“Dear St. Francis Mariners Community, I am writing to address a recent media story involving a reporter’s presence at our recent School Board meeting and the concerns that followed. I understand there may be confusion stemming from the situation, and I want to provide some clarity. Reporters did attend the meeting without recording and were provided with the information they requested. That said, I apologize for the way the situation was handled. [N.S.: Correct English: That said, I apologize for the way I handled the situation.] In hindsight, I wish I had approached it differently, and I regret any frustration or uncertainty this may have caused. I recognize that the District must always balance transparency with sensitivity, and I am committed to learn and grow from moments like these. My intent during the meeting was to uphold the District’s policy while being especially mindful of the impact the situation might have on the individuals and families connected to a recent, serious matter involving a former Junior Varsity Baseball Coach. The safety, privacy, and well-being of our students and families remain my top priority. The St. Francis School District is grounded in its openness, trust, and community engagement. We remain committed to keeping our families informed and supported through honest, thoughtful communication. Thank you for your continued partnership, understanding, and the opportunity to share this update.”
Still, Wrong Deborah Kerr enjoyed a victory over the press doing its legitimate job. She has to be fired, and the school board has to be forced to throw out its illegal rules.
