Three cops murdered an unarmed black man; so what did they get?

Did I miss GRA's coverage of Memphis - the three black officers acquitted in the Spare Tyre beating? Or is this story just slow to make the rounds? A very satisfying "L" on the Crumpster's scorecard. Nuthin' for Nichols.

Just hearing about it this morning, maybe because tgp has been too busy celebrating the 5-minute india-pakistan truce or yesterday's short-lived statistical sham about federal borrowing being less than last year, if you choose a very specific time window. And prematurely celebrating the 80% prescription discounts. And acting like they're MTG's publicity office.

A.T., I have to tell you, I saw the story and couldn't come up with a narrative to post anything about it. Should I be thrilled because three probably crooked (99% chance) black cops got off? Not a chance. I'd rather see them locked up. A quick question, if you know the answer: Are they suing for millions? 99% chance I know the answer to that one, too.

bLACK PO-LEESE FOUND INNOCENT--STILL GOING TO PRISON DUE TO OTHER CONVICTIONS(FEDERAL)

AP
Three former Memphis officers were acquitted Wednesday of all state charges, including second-degree murder, in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols after he ran away from a traffic stop, a death that sparked nationwide protests and prompted renewed calls for police reforms in the U.S.

An out-of-town jury from a majority-white county took about 8 1/2 hours over two days to find Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith not guilty on all charges after a nine-day trial in state court in Memphis, which is majority-Black. After the jury’s verdict was read, the defendants hugged their lawyers as relatives of the former officers cried. Outside the courtroom, one relative yelled, “Thank you, Jesus!”

Martin Zummach, Smith’s attorney, told The Associated Press by text: “It’s easy to defend a good person. It’s nerve racking to represent an innocent man. “

The three defendants still face the prospect of years in prison after they were convicted of federal charges last year, though they were acquitted of the most serious charges then, too. Two other former officers previously pleaded guilty in both state and federal court, including Emmitt Martin, who defense attorneys blamed for the majority of the violence.

The Nichols fambilee is suing the police department for 550 million, with uncle ben crump handling the case. It's scheduled for next year.

Thanks! The mainstream story I saw was days late and didn't even mention the separate suit or the federal convictions. So now I know that Crump went where the money is, namely the city cave-in crew reenacting a Publishers Clearinghouse giveaway. Sue for 9 figures, settle for 8 figures, and he walks out of there with easy money, probably $10 million minimum share of the jackpot.

Well except--as in the Lyoya case(uncle ben cooking civil lawsuit rice here too),a lack of a conviction hurts the civil case. Crump may have to do some work and settle out of court for much less, but maybe the city will roll the dice and call their bluff entirely. Crump doesn't like criminal juries ruling for the cop.
