“Norm!” Last call for George Wendt from Cheers--he had his final brewski today--dead at 76
“(nbc noise) actor George Wendt, who once played the ever-loyal Norm on Cheers," died tuesday morning at his home at the age of 76, his family confirmed in a statement through his publicist.
“'George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,' the statement said. 'he will be missed forever.
“Wendt was one of tv’s most recognizable faces after appearing in more than 260 episodes of the popular boston bar-set sitcom. his character, Norm, was a jovial beer lover who sat at the same stool at the bar, which shared the same name as the show.
[N.S.: Language-check: Which the show was named after; otherwise, it sounds like sort of coincidence.]
“Norm was a dedicated patron of the bar 'where everybody knows your name,' proving the adage true when the bar would call out “Norm!” when he walked in.”
Woody (to Norm at the bar): Hey, Mr. Petersen.
Norm: Hey, Woody.
Woody: I said, HEY, MR.PETERSEN. He won't answer, Sam.
Sam: That's strange. Another beer, Norm?
Norm: Let me flip my two-headed beer coin. Whattaya know, guys--it came up yes, again--sure, Sammy.
Sam: You're right, Woody, he's just sitting there. Hey Frasier--you're a doctor--go check Norm out.
Frasier: I think he's dead, Sam. I can see it from here.
Carla: And he's still balancing on that barstool?
Frasier: After 40 years of sitting there, that's normal for him--alive OR dead.
Norm: Hey guys, why are you acting like you can't hear me?
(Cliff walks out of the bathroom.)
Sam: Someone better tell Cliffy about Norm.
Diane: I'll do it, Sam. Cliff?
Cliff: Yeah, Diane, let me sit next to my old buddy, Normie, here first--go ahead with your query there, Diane.
Diane: When's the last time you've seen Norman move, Cliff?
Cliff: About 10 a.m. this morning, when we opened the joint. He's been very agreeable today--listening to my recollection of the history of the war of 1812.
Diane: He's gone, Cliff...
Norm: I'm right HERE. Hey, what's Freddie DeCordova doing at Cheers?
Fred DeCordova: C'mon Norm, you're on with Johnny in 15 minutes--on the Afterlife Tonight Show.
Norm: Will there be beer?
Fred: What do YOU think?
Norm: Let me flip my beer coin--YES! I'll take two to start with, Mr.DeCordova--let's go.
Fred: Right this way.
