Metsizos Jump to 9-2 Lead in the Fouth--Can They Hang on?

GRA: It's early yet.

P.S.: It's npw 10-5, after five. The federal crime dodgers really want to close this one out.

Make that 10-6, in the top of the sixth, off a Mookie Betts solo shot offf of Stanek.

I was just going to post the update--with the same question.

10-6 after 5 1/2 innings--can they hang on?

12-6 -is baseball still coming up with ridiculously high-scoring games?

WORLD SERIES, 1974-
Game 5, Thursday :
The A's took an early lead, and again Walter Alston didn't seem concerned enough to get men warming up in the bullpen. Vida Blue held up well for Oakland till midway, when the Dodgers tied the game!
I'll quote this from Wikipedia: "Joe Rudi got what would turn out to be the game-winning RBI when he tagged Dodger ace reliever Mike Marshall with a homer in the bottom of the seventh. The half-inning was delayed when Bill Buckner complained of A's fans throwing debris onto the field. Marshall, who always pitched in short sleeves, disdained his allowance of eight warm up pitches after coming in from the bullpen even after the delay. Rudi then proceeded to deposit Marshall's first pitch over the left field wall." What was I saying about serendipity? The yahoos in the stands tossed what looked like toilet paper onto the field, the game was delayed five minutes, the pitcher was discombobulated, and WHAM- there goes the game. Final score, 3-2 (again!) Oakland. (Fingers again was the reliever.)
More from Wiki:
"The Dodgers got six more hits than the A's but scored five fewer runs, showing their lack of timely hitting. They also made six errors in five games, in addition to a number of mental errors.

The champion A's batted only .211 in the Series, the lowest in a five-game Series since the Baltimore Orioles hit .146 and lost in 1969.

As of 2021, the A's are the only team besides the Yankees to win three consecutive World Series. "

You wouldn't call either of these teams great, but in the end it was entertaining. Baseball series do have that knack of starting off slow and gradually gaining momentum (and suspense, even knowing the outcome!).

That was the end of the Oakland dynasty. The Dodgers would come back strong a few years later under Tommy Lasorda, who was their third-base coach for this series. The personification of the meddlesome celebrity owner, begun by Charles Finley, would reach full bloom shortly with the rise of George Steinbrenner.

NBC and MLB, in their infinite wisdom, did their usual job of NOT preserving the games. The final game was missing the first two innings and, sadly, the last inning, A radio broadcast had to suffice. It's lucky anything survives!

Celebrities seen: Lawrence Welk, Claude Akins (uncharacteristically cheerful while signing an autograph- at that time he was starring in an NBC series, "Movin' On"). Heard but not seen due to lost video, Gordon MacRae magnificently singing the National Anthem (do they even have that anymore now that we're a full-blown Communist country?). To hear someone with a voice...

The videos are available on youtube. Detailed play-by-play on wikipedia (see, it's good for SOMETHING!). Hope someone enjoyed this-
