"former new york gov. David Paterson was attacked by a trio of young suspects [sic] while walking on the upper east side on friday night, law enforcement sources said."

"suspects" didn't attack him, perps did.

And they weren't "youngersters," either. They were colored thugs, four of whom were black, and one of whom was hispanic.

"Paterson and his stepson encountered a group trying to climb a fire escape."

That means thery were attempting to burglarize someone's apartment.
