"of Gay's 17 published academic works, seven had been found to contain alleged examples of plagiarism."
In english Smith had two options, either
of Gay's 17 published academic works, seven had been found to contain examples of plagiarism.
Or:
of Gay's 17 published academic works, seven were alleged to contain examples of plagiarism.
But you can't go both ways.
The following sentence is even worse:
"On Monday, that total rose to eight - with another piece of her writing allegedly found to have duplications."
"duplications"? What the heck are those?
Either:
on monday, that total rose to eight - with another piece of her writing found to be plagiarized.
Or:
on monday, that total rose to eight - with another piece of her writing alleged to be plagiarized.
