Thanking the officer is part of a defense technique used to get an acquittal? "You see officer, we hold not grudge. We are good people."
That officer is very, very lucky he is alive or badly wounded. The bad guy did not show his hands and did have a gun and fire at the officer. Casually walking along as if nothing was wrong. But he did have the presence of mind to get close to the officer and fire shots instead of instantly running. It is all bull.
