I lived in New Mexico and worked in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Las Cruces. Funny, I never knew it was an "island." However, there was a standard feature in the back of the New Mexico magazine which detailed instances of people--including US Federal officials-- who didn't understand that New Mexico was a state. I recall meeting a tourist from Germany, I think, who asked me if they take US dollars here. Unfortunately due to the leftism of the Hispanics and Indians, plus the infusion of Californians and New Yorkers, the government there is hopeless. I still go back every year for the scenery, summer thunderstorms, and the food. Don't confuse real New Mexican food with the slop they serve in Mexican restaurants or "Tex Mex." Real New Mexican food--featuring green chile--stops at the New Mexican borders. (And yes, in New Mexico it is spelled chile--not chili--and the state legislature made it official.)
