“On the heels of a denial for a broad gag order in the case, Baltimore's top prosecutor on Monday asked a judge instead to bar attorneys representing the six police officers charged in Freddie Gray's death from sharing evidence before their trial.”

A long-time complaint by defense attorneys is for prosecutors to ask for a gag order. This shuts up the defense while the press supposedly parrots the prosecution line.
In high profile cases, the defense (sometimes) uses the press to get their message across. F. Lee Bailey is said to have invented the press conference on the courthouse steps.
In the O.J. Simpson criminal trial, the prosecution needed a gag order as Bailey, Cochran, and Shapiro were killing them with the aid of the MSM. The detectives (Lange and Vanatter) begged the prosecutors to ask for a gag order. The political District Attorney, Gil Garcetti and lead trial prosecutor Marcia Clark would have none of it. Garcetti loved talking to the press and Clark enjoyed the notoriety the trial was bringing her. If you read Clark's book on the trial closely, you will see she had been hoping for a big trial as a way to get some financial security.
Marcia Clark got the latter, a book deal worth 4.2 million.
