Detroit Hasn’t been a Metropolis for a Generation, but It Still Has Big-Time Crime: “Sunny Weather, Idle Hands and Holiday Partying Helped Make for a Bloody Mix in Detroit Over the Labor Day Weekend, Police Said; from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, there were 32 Shootings in the City”

Strange.

Did Gillette, Wyoming, or Wheeling, West Virginia have the same number of shootings over the Labor Day weekend?

I'm sure Gillette and Wheeling had "sunny weather, idle hands and holiday partying" over the Labor Day weekend.
I mean, who works on Labor Day weekend?

So, why the gratuitous mention of "idle hands"?

[N.S.: Besides which, just about everyone in Detroit will have idle hands 366 days this year, including those who are nominally employed.]

Are the folks behind The Onion the same ones behind The Detroit News?

[What a mystery. Detroit presently has only 688,701 “residents,” yet it had more shootings on one holiday weekend in 2016, than it used to have in a month, in its glory days as the Paris of the West, when it had 1,848,000 citizens.]

"But Police Chief James Craig pointed out this Labor Day weekend was less deadly than last year’s holiday weekend..."

A little quick math suggests that the murder rate now is about 45 times worse than the glory days of Detroit. Anyone have a problem with that calculation?

Detroit the first modern city in the world. Built and designed with the automobile in mind.

They do have a lot of free time but plenty of time for partying and boozing. that combination of liquor and the HOT weather always does it. Cops always have a good excuse.

2/3 of the population has up and left. We are seeing what one would have seen if we had been around to see Rome after the city fell to the barbarians.

Entire blocks of Detroit have been bulldozed. Some time ago. Half of that city has gone back to nature. They have been studying the phenomenon from a satellite for decades. Fancy that.

They bulldozed them right over here to Grand Rapids. We need to borrow that bulldozer--or jigdozer--I guess is the correct term.

Devil's Night they supposedly have the arson under control now. What they do not say is that most everything that can be burned down has been done so a long time ago. NOT much more to burn.

Mayor Dave Bing said he would be satisfied and was hoping the population would drop to around 500,000 and then stabilize. Then the city might become solvent. Don't hold your breath too long.
