I've noticed that for almost any crime story which involves some despicable and/or brutal act where someone was apprehended, if I search enough online for the perp, despite the media cover up, at least at some level (usually local) you can usually find a pic of the perp, and nearly always, they are a "vibrant person of color". On the much less common occasion that it was a white guy, they make sure that its front and center.
