St. Louis man dies a month after beating on city street

A man who was punched on a St. Louis street, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement, has died of his injuries about a month after the attack.
Dennis Whitby, 54, of the 2100 block of East College Avenue, died Saturday.
Police said he was attacked in the 4300 block of Warne Avenue just before 7 p.m. on Aug. 8. Witnesses told police Whitby was seen talking to a man when the man struck Whitby in the face with a closed fist, causing him to fall and strike his head. The man then sped off in a maroon vehicle. Police do not know if the men knew each other.
Authorities arrived and found Whitby unconscious. He had sustained injuries to the face and head and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The scene of the attack is a few block north of Fairground Park and not far from Whitby's home address.
