I just came across this, while going through old mail. When I first responded, on 1/4, I was in Trinidad, and so I sent one copy to you and one to my home pc.

 

I had forgotten about the I-57 killers, whom I don't recall having previously heard of. Although there were four of them, already then pc had set in, and only the actual shooter was given the full weight of the law. Or what passed for the law. The SC had shut down the death penalty, so three murders only got Henry Brisbon "life." Then while in jail, he committed 15 assaults, attacking even the warden, instigated a prison riot, and finally graduated to murdering a fellow inmate.

 

By then, the DP was back in business, but Brisbon sat on Death Row for over 20 years. Finally, George Ryan was governor, and facing jail time of his own for selling driver's licenses to people who couldn't drive, or who were illegals. Apparently in a bid to earn sympathy and possibly skip prison time, he granted clemency or commuted the sentence of 167 condemned murderers, including Brisbon.

A retired SFPD Deputy Chief told me (and wrote) that the Zebra killings inspired a trebling (I believe) in b-o-w murders in the late 1970s.

 

As for other b-o-w mass murders, actually quite a few individual black killers of 20-100 whites each are known, but the media will mention such a story once, when the killer is caught, and then bury it. It looks like I have a book to write.

And the numbers if truly known would astound?
