As I've asserted for months, Oprah Winfrey may run for POTUS after all. According to Lesta Holt (NBC News), Winfrey is reconsidering her decision of “definitely not running in 2020.”
Winfrey’s “friend” and employee, Gayle King (O magazine editor-in-chief and CBS News personality) is pushing Winfrey to do it, though Winfrey says running for and being President “would kill me.”
The report today has Winfrey reportedly saying to King, “I thought you were supposed to care for my well-being.”
To which King said, “The country is more important than your well-being.”
She'll run, and she'll win.

No, birthright citizenship isn't required by the Constitution

As a matter of constitutional first principle, no branch of our government can amend the Constitution. Not the Congress, not the President, not even the Supreme Court. Only “we the people” can do that, by one of the two procedures specified in Article V of the Constitution.
Had President Trump’s recent comments proposing to end birthright citizenship by executive order suggested that he thought he could unilaterally amend the Constitution, they would and should be met with a resounding response that he has no such authority.
That is not what he proposed, of course, though the notion that birth on U.S. soil is alone sufficient to be granted automatic citizenship has become so conventional that many have wrongly concluded otherwise. The Fourteenth Amendment’s citizenship clause, adopted in 1868, actually has two components, not one: birth on U.S. soil, and being subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.
Here’s the actual text: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” (Emphasis added.)
Some read the phrase, “subject to the jurisdiction,” to be synonymous with “subject to the laws,” and therefore conclude that everyone born in the U.S. (with the small exception of children born to foreign diplomats) is automatically a citizen.
But that is not how those who drafted and ratified the Fourteenth Amendment understood it. For them, being subject to the laws was synonymous with being subject to the “partial” or “territorial” jurisdiction of the United States. Anyone on U.S. soil is of course subject to our laws.
Sen. Lyman Trumbull, a key figure in the drafting and adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment, noted at the time that “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States meant subject to its “complete” juris-diction, “[n]ot owing allegiance to anybody else.” The clause therefore mirrored and constitutionalized language that was already in the 1866 Civil Rights Act: “All persons born in the United States, and not subject to any foreign power, excluding Indians not taxed, are hereby declared to be citizens of the United States.”
Thomas Cooley, one of the preeminent constitutional law writers of the 19th century, agreed. As he noted in The General Principles of Constitutional Law in America, “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States “meant full and complete jurisdiction to which citizens are generally subject, and not any qualified and partial jurisdiction, such as may consist with allegiance to some other government.”
And as the Supreme Court noted in the 1872 Slaughter-House Cases, “The phrase, ‘subject to its jurisdiction’ was intended to exclude from its operation children of ministers, consuls, and citizens or subjects of foreign States born within the United States.”
In the 1898 decision known as Wong Kim Ark, the Supreme Court held that the children of parents who were lawful and permanent residents in the United States were citizens, but it has never decided that the children of temporary visitors, much less the children of those unlawfully present in the United States, are citizens.
Children born to parents who are subject to the complete jurisdiction of the United States are automatically citizens because their parents have already consented to be part of the American political community, and the American political community has consented to their membership. That is not true of those who are extended the privilege of temporarily visiting this country, and certainly not true of those who have never been granted permission even to enter. To argue otherwise is to attack the foundational principles of American political community embodied in our Declaration of Independence.
To allow individuals in the country illegally to demand citizenship for their children is to change such bilateral consent into a unilateral one, which destroys the notion of consent, undermines the rule of law, deprives Congress of its power to set naturalization policy, commits an injustice against the current citizens, and threatens the very idea of sovereignty. We should applaud President Trump for proposing to take this first step to set us back on the correct, constitutional course.

You may have heard about the 2 young girls found dead in the Hudson River (New York Times article).
Their names were Tala Farea 16, and Rotana Farea, 22. Both were from Saudi Arabia, and interestingly had both just applied for political asylum.
Coincidentally, the Saudi Embassy had called the parents and demanded the girls’ return to Saudi Arabia, right after they applied. The media is treating this one with an air of mystified confusion, for PC reasons, no doubt, because this one is likely to be an honor killing.
It's still early and I can't say for certain but the elements are there: Young, rebellious female victims is the first clue, the asylum application and that they were bound together facing each other seems symbolic in some way. Was the family humiliated and decided to kill the girls? Perhaps Saudi operatives here in the US are sending a signal to any other young women who might want to escape Saudi Arabia for the wicked West?
This is reminiscent of the Shafia family murders where four women, three young ones and a middle-aged one were all murdered by the Afghani father (of the young girls). This occurred in Canada, and received a fair amount of media attention up there and provoked a lot of debate about "honor killings." That doesn't happen so much in the US. Media outlets and liberal talking sock puppets usually observe the PC “respectful attitude” toward other cultures’ murderous customs. They might not feel safe if we didn't do that.
American liberals would love nothing better than to discover these girls fell victim to a “white” American serial killer, and while anything is possible, my money is on those good old Middle Eastern family values, the ones that don't value the lives of females much, that is.

ABC is treating viewers to even more of the Conner family.
On Friday, the network announced that it was ordering an additional episode of The Conners. The series — which was spun-off from Roseanne after star Roseanne Barr was fired for a racist tweet attacking former President Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett — was initially greenlit for 10 episodes, but Friday’s news brings the season total to 11 with the possibility for more.
[N.S.: I've never heard of a programming chief ordering one, lousy additional episode of a weekly series. The norm would be ten more, in order to complete the season.]
The Conners‘ ratings were down significantly from the premiere of Roseanne last spring, but was on par with Roseanne‘s finale and even managed to edge out NBC’s This Is Us for the night. Tuesday night’s episode was down 26 percent in the demo from the premiere; that’s a bit more than your typical second-week drop for a “new” series, but also far from the plummet that some had predicted. One big factor was that Fox aired Game 1 of the World Series that night. Still, the comedy was the second-highest rated entertainment series Tuesday night, behind only This Is Us.
GRA: Bottom line: Channing Dungey will stubbornly hold on to this show, out of spite. The show has a dead character that's more important than the ones still living, similar to, if Archie Bunker would have been killed off on his series, All in the Family. The other characters all fed off the main actor. Without that character—disaster. Fire Dungey, fire Holt, put a muzzle on Hillary.

TCM's Film Noir of the Week for Saturday Night-Sunday Morning at 12 a.m. ET (and 10 a.m. ET Sunday Morning) is Follow Me Quietly (1949), with William Lundigan and Dorothy Patrick. Lundigan and Patrick were usually supporting players but have the lead in this RKO B picture.
William Lundigan and Jeff Corey play detectives pursuing a “faceless,” psychopathic serial killer. Character actor Corey is best known for playing the despicable, self-pitying, white trash killer, Tom Chaney (and an alias), in True Grit (1969). Within the business, however, he was a legendary acting coach.
Richard Fleischer directed and, in his usual fashion, gets a lot of story in a 59-minute movie.
Detective Lundigan pursues a serial killer called "The Judge." Patrick is a girl reporter who pushes the detective to give her the story.
Follow Me Quietly is one of the first serial killer movies. Watch for an improbable, but hair-raising scene.
It has a good script by Lillie Hayward, off a story by Francis Rosenwald and Anthony Mann (Mann would become a top director in the 1950s, particularly noted for his Jimmy Stewart pictures), and some suspense, directed by Fleischer in an early effort.
