From the Mets to Los Mets to Lost Mets
(Part I of a Series)
By Nicholas Stix
Mets General Manager Omar Minaya is the big leagues’ first Hispanic general manager. Is he the baseball counterpart to Soledad O’Brien, as in someone given high-profile, highly paid positions based solely on his race or ethnicity, rather than his abilities, and who proves himself a racist incompetent on the job?
With O’Brien, as my VDARE.com colleague Joe Guzzardi showed, in bestowing on her the 2010 VDARE Worst Immigration Reporter Award (VDWIRA), the matter is a slam dunk. In fact, there was so much damning material on O’Brien that Joe needed a second column, in order to complete his case!
But Minaya?
After all, wasn’t Minaya’s first Mets team, in 2005, the first winning team (83-79) the organization had fielded in four years? And didn’t his 2006 club win the most games in the league (97), and come one inning from going to the World Series? And didn’t the 2007 and 2008 teams almost win the NL East?
Well, consider the following:
• Every year that Minaya has run the club, the Mets have had the highest payroll in the National League, while only reaching the playoffs once;
• Five years with the league’s highest payroll has bought an average of 85.4 wins per season (the Mets also had the league’s highest payroll in 2003 and 2004, but did not have the highest NL payroll for the years 1993-2002, which includes their World Series season of 2000);
• Last season, the league’s highest payroll bought them a 70-92 record, and fourth place in the NL East (they fought the Washington Nationals tenaciously for fifth—i.e., last—place, but ran out of time);
• At $149,373,987, the Mets spent over four times as much last season as division rival, the Florida Marlins ($36,834,000), but the Marlins won 17 more games than the Mets (87 to 70; i.e., the Mets spent about five times as much per win—app. $2.13 million vs. app. $423,000—as the Marlins did;
• Despite having baseball’s lowest payroll in 2009, the Marlins had a winning team, and ended up in second place behind the defending World Series champs, the Phillies;
• After leading their division in 2007 and 2008, the Mets choked each season down the stretch, with the 2007 collapse going down as the worst in big league baseball history, as they went from seven games in first place, with 17 games to go, to losing the division on the last day of the regular season. In 2008, they “merely” went from three games in first place with 17 to go, to losing the division by three games, and again missing out on the postseason with a loss on the last day of the regular season (both years to the Marlins);
• In five years Minaya, aided and abetted by his right-hand man, VP of Minor League Player Development, Tony Bernazard, managed somehow to gut the team’s farm system (see also, here and here);
• Minaya kept Bernazard on the job, after the latter proved himself both incompetent and a walking scandal machine (see also here and here), only firing Bernazard after the Daily News published exposés on the latter. Minaya then sought to deflect blame by publicly slandering the reporter, Adam Rubin, who had exposed Bernazard;
• Not only did Minaya’s transparent, pro-Hispanic bias in building the team alienate many white fans, but his shameless playing of the “race card” even offended some Hispanic stars;
• Minaya installed a Latin Mafia at the minor league level, which the Mets’ principal owner, Fred Wilpon (or his son, team COO Jeff) only began dismantling last fall, in the wake of the Bernazard scandals;
• The current team has no stars that were developed under Minaya and Bernazard—its only home-grown stars, Jose Reyes and David Wright, were already on the big club when Minaya took over;
• In 2009, the club mishandled one injury after another to stars (Reyes and Beltran) and to one major acquisition (J.J. Putz), so that its own players no longer trust its own medical staff, and free agents shun the Mets;
• Minaya has overpaid for Hispanic free agents (e.g., Martinez and Beltran), and wildly overpaid to re-sign often marginal or fading (Castillo, Tatis, Cora, et al.) Hispanic players already on the team;
• Minaya has done nothing to fill the team’s greatest need for the 2010 campaign: Quality starting pitching;
• Minaya undermined, and permitted Bernazard to undermine his black manager, Willie Randolph, with the team’s Hispanic players, and then fired him, in a “disgraceful” manner;
• Minaya has for years maintained an ethnically and linguistically fractured clubhouse, with no sense of cohesion and no character (see chokes);
• Although the team’s fan base was and remains overwhelmingly white, Minaya decided, from the get-go, to alienate them, sign and trade for racist and anti-American Hispanic stars, identify with Hispanics whose financial support for, and identification with the team is minimal (New York Hispanics overwhelmingly support the Yankees), and recast it as “Los Mets.”
So, baseball’s first Hispanic GM isn’t quite as bad as Soledad O’Brien, but he’s still an affirmative action hire, still racist, still unprofessional as heck, and still incompetent.
In the name of diversity, who could ask for anything more?

Knoxville Horror Carjacker-Kidnapper-Rapist-Torturer-Murderer Letalvis Cobbins Sentenced to “Life” Plus 100 Years
Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom, the victims of the January 6-7, 2007 Knoxville Horror.
[My reader-researcher David in Tennessee sent the following update on the Knoxville Horror case Thursday. Letalvis Cobbins had already been sentenced to “life without parole” in August for murder and aggravated rape, but had additional convictions outstanding, for the Horror.]
Today, Judge Baumgartner sentenced Letalvis Cobbins to life, plus 100 Years. You will recall that the Judge brought in a jury from Nashville for the trial of Cobbins last August.
Letalvis Cobbins at Thursday’s sentencing hearing, with a new perm and defense counsel, Kimberly Parton.
From Jamie Satterfield’s twitter reports, we learn that Judge Baumgartner said that Cobbins can’t blame his half-brother, Davidson. The judge said that even if he had a rough childhood, Cobbins’ sister overcame it. Baumgartner “can’t comprehend how someone could commit crimes like this.”
You could explain it to him, couldn’t you?
Judge Baumgartner finally said it was the “worst of the worst.”
As you wrote, he didn’t want them found not guilty, he just opposed the death penalty.
Judge Richard Baumgartner
at Cobbins’ sentencing hearing.
[Later, David sent the follow-up message below.]
Here is Jamie Satterfield’s KNS story on today’s sentencing. The commenters believe that “life in prison” means life.
KNOXVILLE - A Knox County judge today stacked 100 years to convicted killer Letalvis Cobbins’ life without parole sentence.
The time was for crimes committed leading up the deaths of Knox County couple Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23, in January 2007.
‘This is the worst of the worst,’ Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner said. ‘If ever there was a case that deserved maximum sentencing, this case deserves maximum sentencing.’
[NS: If that’s his true opinion, i.e., that Cobbins deserved the death penalty, then why did he tamper with the jury’s potential demographics, in order to preclude that possibility?]
The decision came after a hearing to determine whether Cobbins should receive additional punishment for crimes that preceded the deaths of the University of Tennessee student and her boyfriend, a trim carpenter.
Newsom’s father had made an extraordinary appeal to his son’s killer during the hearing.
‘All you have to do is testify in a grand jury hearing stating who participated in grabbing Chris and Channon ... all you have to do is make arrangements before you go back to prison to testify before a grand jury and at Eric Boyd’s trial,’ Hugh Newsom told Cobbins.
‘All you have to do is tell the truth.’…
Cobbins answered him with silence.
Christopher Newsom’s parents, Hugh and Mary at Lemaricus Davidson’s trial last October. Davidson is the only one of the killers so far to be sentenced to death.
Boyd is serving a federal prison sentence for hiding out Cobbins’ brother, Lemaricus Davidson. He has long been suspected in the slayings, but so far authorities have not been able to gather enough evidence to bring murder charges against him.
Eric Boyd
Cobbins had testified at his own trial that Boyd and Davidson killed Chris Newsom….”
“Judge stacks 100 years to Cobbins’ life-without-parole sentence” by Jamie Satterfield, Knoxville News Sentinel, February 25, 2010.
The 100-year sentencing enhancement is meaningless and, along with the original sentence of “life without parole,” can be reversed with the flourish of a governor’s pen.

Diversity is Strength: It’s Also Aliens Deliberately Spreading AIDS
[I copied this from American Renaissance, to whose crack staff I tip my cap.]
Police in Pirkanmaa suspects a nearly 30-year-old woman with intent to have had unprotected sex, even though she knew she was HIV positive. The suspected woman has worked as an erotic dancer in Tampere, Jyväskylä and Lahti.
The woman named Judith Omondi-Mäkelä, but has also used the name Rachel. She was born in 1982 and lives in Tampere. She must have had multiple sexual partners during the years 2005 to 2010. The woman is now in custody.
The investigations so far police have found the seven men who had sexual involvement with a woman, but police believe the men may be many more.
The police has released an image of the woman so that men who suspect they may be contaminated, becoming HIV-tested. The police point out that the men could float in danger and can also spread the infection to others.
The woman has consented to the picture published.

Derek Black Interviews Jared Taylor
By Nicholas Stix
A reader sent along this link, for which I thank him. I listened to it, and if you just want to hear the Taylor radio interview, it's about 35 minutes in. Topic: Terrorists' success, through threatening to murder hotel personnel, at getting four hotels to cancel the American Renaissance 2010 Conference.
(For fuller background on the story, check out my report, “‘Obama’ and Holder are Victorious, as Communist and Anarchist Terrorists Use Death Threats to Shut Down American Renaissance Conference.”)
If you can stand it, after the interview is over, one of the terrorists, Jeffrey Imm, calls in. You can tell that it's him, because he never lets young Black get a word in edgewise, and--to borrow from what Mary McCarthy said of Lillian Hellman--every word he said was a lie, including "and," and "the." (Considering that I will soon be celebrating my annual 21st birthday, I suppose it doesn't make much sense to call 21-year-old Derek Black "young Black" ... moving right along...)
After a few minutes of Imm's ranting, raving, and ignoring of Black's polite questions, Black's producer comes in and whispers in Black's ear that Imm had been calling station employees, trying to get them to sabotage the very show whose time he was now wasting!
I suppose that Black figured that it was not only unintentionally hilarious--Imm clearly has no sense of humor or irony--but instructive to let the terrorist rant, rave, and lie for a while, in order to let the whole world know what he was like, before shutting him down.
Imm told his usual lie, reagarding the radio station, that he was merely informing station employees what Black was about. Right.

“Obama” and Holder are Victorious, as Communist and Anarchist Terrorists Use Death Threats to Shut Down American Renaissance Conference
By Nicholas Stix
(Updated at 8:47 a.m. Last updated at 9:27 a.m.)
Using death threats against hotel employees, terrorists succeeded at getting the hotel hosting the American Renaissance 2010 Conference to cancel the contract. The conference had been scheduled for February 19-21, at a hotel near Dulles Airport, and this was the third hotel which had canceled.
At the hotel, the terrorists threatened staffers with murder, if the conference took place. Though this will surely be news to Attorney General Eric Holder, who believes that the laws forbid only acts committed by people he hates, that is a federal felony, as well as a violation of the group’s (and mine, since I had registered to attend) first amendment rights to freedom of opinion, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly.
(In 2008, leftwing terrorists had called hotel employees at home, and threatened to murder them, but the conference went on without a hitch, and was a rousing success. I know; I was there.)
The racist-communist group One People’s Project, which has long bragged of using violence against those whom it hates, put out a press release on its home page, preening over its victory.
“THE ANTIFA DID IT! AMERICAN RENAISSANCE CONFERENCE CANCELED!”
“Antifa,” a contemporary euphemism for “communist,” is a shortened version of the old code word, “anti-fascist.” A contemporary equivalent is “anti-racist.”
OPP chopped its press release into two parts. The first, short part, on the group’s main page, the only part that most people will read, was careful to omit the real reason for their “success”: The death threats. Instead, they make it seem as though through hard work and moral suasion, they had gotten the hotel to cancel the event, and joke about causing participants an “inconvenience.”
In a classic case of projection, in the short version, One People’s Project called those who had planned on attending the conference, “psychopathic.”
In other words, according to OPP, people who use scientific facts and logic to discuss controversial matters are “psychopaths,” while people who threaten hotel employees, “If you hold this conference I will go in there and shoot you,” are perfectly sane.
The permalink to the front page version, however, is to the complete version. Thus, once OPP removes the short version (see below) from its main page, there will be no more evidence of the group’s chicanery.
Note too that the “story” on muckraker James O’Keefe, who with his partner exposed ACORN, that the OPP press release refers to, was a hoax that was exposed by Larry O’Connor at Big Journalism.
With these guys, you get lies on top of lies, on top of lies.
OPP was founded by black racist/communist, Daryle Lamont Jenkins. OPP’s slogan is, “A resource for those on the front lines fighting fascism… especially those who don’t play nice.” In other word, they are violent racist communists, who make common cause with their like. OPP has not a cross word to say about genocidal black supremacists.
American Renaissance’s Jared Taylor sent out the following e-mail to all participants.
Taylor also put out a press release:
OPP worked together with the “Self-Described Anarchist Collective,” the R.E.A.L. Organization,” and the Mormon Worker newspaper.
As best I could determine, there is no organization behind the moniker, “R.E.A.L.” (Responsible for Equality And Liberty – Love is More Powerful Than Hate – Love Wins”), just one man, Jeffrey Imm. Imm, who started the ball rolling with the terrorist campaign, reportedly was an employee of the FBI, and in recent years has contracted with the Department of Homeland Security.
For Imm, terrorism equals “love.” Paging George Orwell!
The Mormon Worker claims to combine Mormonism with “radical politics.” It’s probably a scam, in order to con Mormons into becoming communists (see also “civil rights movement,” “feminism,” “environmentalism,” etc.). In any event, in addition to such well-known Mormons as Noam Chomsky and Norman Finkelstein, the contributors page lists 16 people who claim to be Mormons, or to have completed a mission abroad.
The “Self-Described Anarchist Collective” is new to me, but when they describe themselves as “hooligans,” I’m willing to take their word for it.
Or perhaps, “hooligan.” As of 6:09 a.m. today, their Web page has not been updated since February 13, and thus has no notice of the conference’s cancellation.
The chief suspects have to be OPP and Imm, since OPP celebrates violence, and Imm, with his talk of “love,” can rationalize anything.
Meanwhile, the MSM has so far refused to report on the matter.
Above all, this was a victory for Eric Holder and his boss, the John Doe calling himself “Barack Obama.”
The Bush I, Clinton, and Bush II administrations had all made life miserable for whites, and especially for race-conscious whites who were fighting to save their country. But only under “Obama,” did the enemies of liberty feel safe in engaging in terrorism. And that was no accident. “Obama,” a longtime devotee of genocidal Black Liberation Theology, has made it clear that it is open season on whites.
Acting on “Obama’s” behalf, Holder has aggressively acted to (literally) disenfranchise whites and strip them of their constitutional rights, by supporting the genocidal black supremacist, domestic terrorist group, the New Black Panther Party (NBP), and by supporting the unconstitutional Hate Crime Bill, which “Obama” has since signed into law.
As I wrote on May 12 in a VDARE exclusive, “Diversity is Strength! It’s Also…’Jim Snow’ Disenfranchisement of Whites,” on Election Day 2008, members of the NBP were caught on videotape at the entrance to a polling place in Philadelphia, dressed in military garb and with at least one (calling himself “King Samir Shabazz”) threatening white voters and poll watchers with a night stick, shouting racial epithets at them, and blocking their entrance. The Panthers made it clear to white voters and poll watchers that they were doing this, in order to help “Obama” win the election.
One of the Panthers allegedly told a white, "You are about to be ruled by the black man, cracker."
The group also claimed that it planned to eventually engage in such terrorism nationwide.
(See also here, here, and here.
View and download a collection of videos of the Philadelphia Panthers’ voting rights violations here, before they’re gone.)
On January 7, the Bush Justice Department sued the New Black Panther Party. On the case’s court date, April 20, the defendants (the Panthers) refused to appear in court. The presiding judge issued a default judgment against the Panthers, as is routine in civil cases in which one side fails to appear, but on May 15, the “Obama” Justice Department insisted instead on dropping the charges against the Panthers, based on their non-appearance! (The DOJ retained only an injunction against one terrorist, to refrain from threatening voters and poll watchers with deadly weapons, pretty please, with a cherry on top. Since federal law already prohibited threatening voters and poll watchers with deadly weapons, the injunction was redundant. And why was this only a civil case, to begin with?)
The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has subpoenaed the Justice Department, in order to question its officials as to their handling of the case, but Justice has stonewalled, inventing non-existent “executive privileges,” and refusing to cooperate.
And then on June 25, 2009, in testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Holder explicitly stated that white heterosexual, conservative Christians would not be protected by the Hate Crimes Bill, which has since passed both chambers and been signed into law by “Obama.”
The terrorist acts that shut down the American Renaissance conference are all actionable. And in spite of the “Obama” Administration’s racism and anti-Americanism, all patriots must demand that the FBI investigate and arrest the terrorists. An example must be made of them.
Meanwhile, “Obama” and Holder have made clear that, as far as they are concerned, white Americans have no rights in their own country, and that through accelerated, mass non-white immigration, they plan on turning American into another South Africa/Zimbabwe. But if reasonable men cannot come together to speak about race and immigration employing scientific facts and logic, the stage will be left to unreasonable men, and that does not mean merely communists, black supremacists, and so forth. There is no moral argument against white nationalists shutting down lectures and conferences, using the same methods as the communists/racists, calling in bomb threats, etc. I do not propose such tactics, but I will not condemn them. As Thomas Hobbes wrote in Leviathan, in a state of anarchy, no man is obliged to follow the state’s laws. Revised for current use, make that “anarcho-tyranny.”
As ye sow, so shall ye reap.

That's right. Done. Kaput. Finished. Over. CANCELED! After three months of getting the word out and letting people know that a group of politically connected white supremacists were planning to meet this weekend, American Renaissance editor Jared Taylor threw in the towel, effectively canceling the American Renaissance Conference 2010. Of course this comes after losing yet another hotel. Taylor and the other organizers thought that they would be able to keep the location under wraps until 48 hours before the conference, to discourage protesters from organizing, a "fool-proof plan" to hear them explain it. Memo to Jared Taylor: Antifa are not fools, and to think otherwise makes you one. People from all over the country went into overdrive trying to find out where this conference was and the effort simply paid off. It didn't help matters much that in the midst of all of this we broke the story about how ACORN videographer James O'Keefe attended a white supremacist forum with Jared Taylor on the panel, because the traffic coming from that also meant people were going to learn more about Taylor and is current activities. That meant the opposition went viral! This has never happened before. This was once a conference that you could watch on C-SPAN. Now you would be lucky if it even happens! We want to thank everyone that stayed on top of this and helped make this happen. As for the other side - those who support Taylor and this conference, especially those who were going, they will continue down their psychopathic roads, regardless of how detrimental it is to them. As Taylor should know by now, there's a lot of people who are willing to be that detriment, and Unlike Taylor, we don't apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused!

American Renaissance’s Jared Taylor sent out the following e-mail to all participants.
Dear AR conference registrant,
We regret to inform you that today, February 15, the hotel at which we planned to hold the conference canceled its contract with us. Hostile callers phoned the hotel and threatened employees with death. One was specifically warned, “If you hold this conference I will go in there and shoot you.” Hotel management reported these threats to the police but felt it had no choice but to cancel.
We had backup possibilities, but all have fallen through, so we will not be holding the February 19-21 conference.
We are very sorry for the great inconvenience this no doubt causes you.
If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to American Renaissance in the amount of your registration that would be welcome. However, we stand ready to refund all registrations and banquet fees. Please let us know by return e-mail how you would like us to proceed.
We understand that many of you have bought non-refundable air tickets. Generally, the amount spent on such tickets can, for a period of a year, be used to buy a different ticket on the same airline. However, most airlines then deduct $150 from the amount that can be spent to buy the new ticket. If you bought a non-refundable ticket, please send us proof of purchase and we will send you a check for $150. We do not want anyone to suffer financial loss because of this cancelation.
Again, please accept our apologies for this very disappointing outcome. We value your continuing support and deeply regret that we will not be seeing you on February 19.
Best regards,
Jared Taylor
Taylor also put out a press release:
American Renaissance: Death Threats End Biennial Conference of Controversial Group
Is there freedom of speech and assembly in Virginia?
OAKTON, Va., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Zealots opposed to a meeting to be held by a Virginia non-profit organization have bullied three hotels into cancelling the event, thus making it impossible for the group to hold its biennial conference. American Renaissance (AR), a monthly magazine that has published on race and immigration for 20 years, had scheduled its ninth biennial meeting for the weekend of Feb. 19 through 21.
Opponents then pressured the hotels -- leafleting the premises, flooding switchboards with phone calls, finding the home phone numbers of hotel employees and threatening them with death -- thus causing the hotels to cancel their contracts to hold the meeting. The last hotel canceled today. More than 250 people had registered for the conference, and guests and speakers were expected from as far away as Britain and South Africa.
American Renaissance has held conferences since 1994. There have been protesters and crank calls, but conferences have always taken place peacefully and successfully.
AR is a race-realist publication edited by Jared Taylor that takes controversial positions:
* That diversity is a source of conflict and not a strength.
* That people of all racial groups prefer the company of people like themselves.
* That Asians are, on average, more intelligent than whites, who are more intelligent than blacks.
However, AR's positions are much less important than what this cancellation means for freedom of speech and assembly.
Any controversial group can be kept from holding meetings by fanatics who -- through the Internet -- decide to gang up on a hotel. If this tactic works against a 501 c (3) educational non-profit like American Renaissance, what is to stop animal rights activists from shutting down a meat-packers' meeting or environmentalists from shutting down miners or foresters?
Freedom of speech and assembly are guaranteed in the Constitution but those rights will be lost if Americans do not fight back against those who would deny them. As Judge Learned Hand put it, "Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can save it."

“Stix is out there doing original research”!
By Nicholas Stix
It can be no accident that Wikitopian’s endorsement came only one day after publication of my newestVDARE.com exposé on the dark heart of diverse America, “Never Heard Of The Pearcy Massacre? One Guess Why Not!”
For a real researcher—be he journalist or scholar—the phrase “original research” is magic. There can be no higher compliment. In that regard, even CNN has plagiarized my research!
Granted, because doing original research is so time-consuming and often fruitless—e.g., repeatedly calling the same police department and either never getting someone on the line or a call-back, or getting blown off—most of the time I have to limit myself to exhaustively studying all of the previous research done on a topic. Yet I try to get original information whenever possible, and that is one of the reasons I don’t presently produce more than I do.
Every day readers, colleagues, and the American Renaissance round-up provide me with so many new racist outrages that I’m perpetually falling ever further behind in reporting on this Diversitopia of ours. If I had a 20-man staff, I’d run it ragged every day reporting and commenting on the Outrages of the Day, trends of the recent past and immediate future, and researching and writing major scholarly reports and essays.
But that’s not about to happen. Nevertheless, with the support of my hardy reader-researchers, readers like those at the top of this page, editor-publishers like Peter Brimelow (here and here), Jared Taylor, and Hans Gruen, and colleagues including many of the folks on the right of this page, as well as some whose names I may not cite, I do the best I can.
And how many other writers can say that they have both the Southern Poverty Law Center and Occidental Dissent promoting their work?!
I thank all of my readers, colleagues, and editors for their support.

Life’s just not that simple. Like it or not, the best and most determined journalist out on the front lines of drawing attention to Whites being victimized by multicult madness is a Jew. While the goyim are content to reshuffle and repackage existing information and ideas, Stix is out there doing original research. He does the difficult and boring work that goes into sharing these powerful stories of people who’ve been repeatedly victimized by their aggressors, then victimized again by the media and government scumbags who try to ignore inconvenient tragedies.

Do You Know Who the Gentry Family and Kristen Warneke were? Why Not?!
By Nicholas Stix
The following are five names that every American adult should know:
• Edward Earl Gentry Sr.;
• Edward “Eddie” Earl Gentry Jr.;
• Eddie’s wife, Pam;
• Eddie and Pam’s son, Jeremy; and
• Jeremy’s girlfriend, Kristen Warneke.
I’ll bet, however, that fewer than one in 100 Americans has heard of them. To find out why, read my VDARE.com exposé, which was published only one hour ago.

Hispandering in Baseball=Money, and Teams, Flushed Down the Tubes
By Nicholas Stix
Almost two weeks ago, a friend wrote, asking, among other things, “Mets sign Jason Bay?”
When I read that, I thought, “He’s gotta be kidding. Bay was signed a month ago!”
After all, I had heard that Bay was signing with the Mets eons ago. So, I punched in his name and “Mets,” and up came up the Miami Herald article, “Is Flushing Beirut?”
According to the author, Chris Ruddick, Bay had held off on the signing, hoping that some other team—any other, even Washington or Hanshin!—would give him a reason to sign elsewhere. When no one did, he reportedly signed a four-year, $66M deal with the Mets.
When Omar Minaya returned to Flushing in ‘05 as GM, no one wanted to play for the Mets, who were losers, so he had to overpay free agents. And now, after five years of him working his magic… no one wants to play for the Mets, who are losers, and so he has to overpay free agents.
For me, the straw that broke the camel’s back was when he signed Luis Castillo to a four-year, $25 million contract, after the ’07 season.
Don’t get me wrong. I like Castillo as a player (game-losing dropped pop-ups, base-running goofs, and idiotic, ejection-provoking arguments with umps, notwithstanding), but…
I asked The Boss last year how old she thought he was. She said, “40.” I laughed, because I agreed with her. Then I told her that he listed as 34. She didn’t believe it, and neither do I. He’s from the Dominican, the Land of Imaginary Jocks’ Ages.
Even Mets announcers acknowledged in ’06 or ’07, before his knee went gimpy, that Castillo had lost a bit of the mobility he’d had in his prime. And then the club learned that he needed arthroscopic surgery on one knee, before offering him the contract. (He signed after getting scoped.)
Thus, Minaya went out of his way to pay serious money to a diminished, broken-down player.
The value of signing Castillo was because he was an aging star who could still help a team, as long as he was signed really cheaply to a one or, at most, two-year contract. Jose Valentin II, but with good speed on the basepaths, instead of power, at maybe $3 mil for a season, max $6 mil for two. (In 2006 and 2007, Valentin earned a combined $4.7M playing for the Mets.) Instead, Minaya paid a past-his-prime second baseman 30-40 percent more than the man had ever earned in his salad days.
Not only did Minaya waste almost $20 mil on Castillo, but overpaying him made it impossible to move him, and locked up money that was then unavailable to sign a top free-agent second baseman such as Orlando Hudson, who then went to the Dodgers, and earned either $3.36M or $7.61M, depending on the source, via an incentive-laden contract, on a base of only $3M.
Castillo’s post-scope injury problems were foreseeable, because we’d been down the same road with Valentin. And before Valentin played at Shea, it was hardly news that older players who are playing every day get hurt more often than younger ones.
When Minaya signed Castillo to that insane contract, all doubt in my mind about his motives was erased. He wasn’t signing Hispanics because they were quality players, and it made economic sense. Rather, he simply wanted to transfer all of the Wilpons’ fortune to Hispanics, the team and the fans be damned.
Apparently, someone whispered something in his ear (maybe, "Remember what happened to Tony Bernazard"?), leading to the Bay signing. But the roster remains frightfully thin on talent, while maintaining a bloated payroll. At $149M, the 2009 Opening Day Mets had the highest payroll in the NL, over 30% higher than the defending World Series champion Phillies ($114M), who had just signed the catch of the free agent class, Raul Ibanez. (The Phillies, of course, we put together by the great Pat Gillick, who had engineered the back-to-back Toronto champs of ‘92-93, and who had not benefited from Hispandering.) Meanwhile, while the Dodgers made it to the League Championship Series last season, in spite of their payroll going down 15%.
Yet the Mets had a miserable season, and were the worst team in the league the last month or two of the season, while the Phillies made it back to the Series. And the Mets start this season with a bloated payroll, but a thinner roster than they did in 2009.
Granted, Castillo had a decent if punchless season, his bizarre moments notwithstanding, but at what price? Meanwhile, in his first year with the Dodgers, the wide-ranging Hudson, an American who looks younger than his official age of 32, went to another All-Star Game and won himself another Gold Glove.
At least when Casey lamented, “Can’t anybody here play this game?!,” the Mets had a second-division payroll, to go with their second-division play.
Is Omar Minaya the baseball counterpart to Soledad O’Brien?
