WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — Two people were injured in a shooting at a Walmart in Wyoming on New Year’s Eve, police say.
Around 6 p.m. Sunday, Wyoming police received several calls reporting shots fired at the Walmart on 54th Street SW near US-131. Officers responded to find a woman who had been shot. She was unrelated to the situation, according to police.
“She was just in the background of the shooting and unfortunately, was shot with a round,” said Lt. Andrew Koeller with The Wyoming Police Department.
Investigation found that two other people had gotten into some sort of “interaction” with a man police called a “targeted individual” inside the store near the check-out lines at the front, said Koeller. At least 10 rounds were fired. That man showed up to a local hospital with a gunshot wound.
Both people who were shot are being treated at the hospital for injuries that are not life-threatening, Koeller said.
Meanwhile, police are looking for two suspects. One had a handgun and was wearing a black parka style winter coat with fur around the collar, a red sweatshirt and dark pants. The other was wearing light colored pants and a black sweatshirt with white lettering across the front. They were both wearing masks, Koeller said, which is why police do not have photos of their faces to release.
“This is a brazen public attack. This is not something that we would tolerate, this is not something that should occur. And we encourage the public to give any information in help solving this brazen crime and like I mentioned, unfortunately, an innocent bystander was struck. Two people were struck and that’s completely unfortunate,” Koeller said.
It’s unclear what the “interaction” was that led up to the shooting or if the suspects knew each other.
