SAN ANTONIO — The mother of an infant found dead at a recycling center last month was in police custody late Tuesday.
Nidia Yolibeth Alvarado, 25, is being accused by San Antonio Police of strangling her son to death. The boy was discovered in a blue duffel bag by a recycling employee at an East Side facility Dec. 23
Alvarado was arrested Tuesday night around 10 p.m. She faces a charge of capital murder.
When Alvarado was asked why she killed the child, who was estimated to be 10 days old, she responded in Spanish, “Threats.”
SAPD spokesman Sgt. Javier Salazar said Alvarado gave a fake name when she gave birth to the child.
After the infant's body was found, Salazar said several people came forward with information, which, combined with detective work, lead to the arrest at a home where the woman resided.
“There were other children who resided at the same place,” Salazar said. It was unclear whether those children belonged to Alvarado.
They were taken into custody by Child Protective Services.
“This case is by no means closed,” Salazar said, adding anyone with additional information on the case is urged to call SAPD's Homicide Unit at 210-207-7635.mdwilson@express-news.net
