TCM’s Film Noir of the Week Saturday Night-Sunday Morning at Midnight and 10 a.m. ET is Edward Dmytryk’s Cornered (1945), with Dick Powell, Walter Slezak, Micheline Cheirel, Morris Carnovsky and Luther Adler.

Cornered is a recycled selection from Memorial Day Weekend five years ago. Powell, as a former Canadian flyer and newly released POW, is searching for the man responsible for his French bride’s death.

For Memorial Day Weekend, TCM is showing its library of war films. Most of the best-known entries are on. Battleground (1949), which we have discussed, is on at 2 a.m. ET early Sunday Morning.

Some recommendations-

APOCALYPSE NOW (The greatest- I met a Nam vet once who told me he couldn't bear to watch the whole movie because that's what it was really like!)
J'ACCUSE! (1937) (Abel Gance- a forgotten masterpiece; he had previously made a very different silent version)
THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE (Notorious for being tampered with by MGM, it still turned out quite well)
WAKE ISLAND (Rugged propaganda flick, great even though the ending is fudged from what really happened)
GUNG HO! (Another tough propaganda movie, hated by the pansy liberals)
THE STEEL HELMET (Sam Fuller Korean War gem)
BUCK PRIVATES (Perfect time capsule of its era, with A&C fresh and new- join the Army and see the Andrews Sisters!)
DUCK SOUP (Marx Bros.' definitive war satire)
And from TV...
VICTORY AT SEA
TWILIGHT ZONE episodes "The Purple Testament" and "The Passersby"
COMBAT! My yearly choice for a memorial Day marathon! Reporting to duty with Sgt. Saunders...

Thanks for the options,RM. What I'VE gotten hooked on are the "Gunsmoke" episodes on ME TV every day at 1 pm. We talked about that series once. Fantastic stories and acting, though Dennis Weaver is a little irritating as Chester.

"I guess I'm SUPPOSED to be irritatin',Mr.Dillon."

Matt and Doc(in unison):"Right,Chester--and YOU ARE! "

THEY DON'T MAKE 'EM(MOVIES)LIKE THAT ANYMORE DEPT:NEW FLICK IN PRODUCTION IS ABOUT FORMER RAIDERS COACH,JOHN MADDEN,TRYING TO GET A FOOTBALL VIDEO GAME MADE

(Breitbart)The upcoming film follows former NFL head coach John Madden, who “teams up with a mild-mannered Harvard programmer to rewrite his fading legacy by building the world’s first football video game” after he was forced into retirement by the Oakland Raiders, according to Madden‘s IMDb page.

It stars Nicolas Cage as Madden.

GRA:Doesn't anyone know how to make interesting movies any more?Sheeesh. You'll be able to find "Madden" in the video section of your store under "Insomnia cures".

I prefer Chester to his successor, Festus Haggen (Ken Curtis)- he's REALLY annoying!

TCM's Film Noir of the Week Saturday Night-Sunday Morning at Midnight and 10 a.m. ET is Don Siegel's The Big Steal (1949) with Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, William Bendix, Ramon Novarro, John Qualen.

Film Noir Guide: "Army Lieutenant Mitchum is hunted by his superior officer (Bendix) after being falsely accused of being in a military payroll heist. The real thief (Knowles) is in Mexico to launder the hot dough through an art-loving fence (Qualen). Along the way, Mitchum meets up with Knowles' ex-fiancee (Greer), who's trying to get back the to grand that Knowles stole from her. Unwilling allies, Mitchum and Greer track Knowles through rural Mexico, while they are in turn pursued by an increasingly frustrated Bendix.

"It's a wild and enjoyable ride, full of plot twists, witty dialogue, nicely staged fistfights and some hysterical slapstick. The usually laid-back and droopy-eyed Mitchum is remarkably energetic. Greer is delightful as his equally dynamic partner. Silent film star Novarro plays a savvy Mexican police inspector who enjoys practicing his English. (The inept attempts at Spanish by Mitchum and Bendix are hysterical).

David In TN: The Big Steal began filming just after Robert Mitchum was busted for Marijuana. It was thought it would harm Mitchum's career, but it made him more popular than ever.
