Some recommendations for Memorial Day Viewing

Some recommendations-

Apocalypse Now (The greatest- I met a Nam vet once who told me he couldn’t bear to watch the whole movie because that’s what it was really like!)

J’accuse! (1937) (Abel Gance-a forgotten masterpiece; he had previously made a very different silent version.)

The Red Badge of Courage (Notorious for being tampered with by MGM, it still turned out quite well.)

Wake Island (Rugged propaganda flick, great even though the ending is fudged from what really happened.)

Gung Ho! (Another tough propaganda movie, hated by the pansy liberals.)

The Steel Helmet (Sam Fuller Korean War gem.)

Buck Privates (Perfect time capsule of its era, with A&C fresh and new- join the Army and see the Andrews Sisters!)

Duck Soup (Marx Bros.’ definitive war satire)

And from TV…

Victory at Sea

Twilight Zone episodes “The Purple Testament” and “The Passersby”

Combat! My yearly choice for a Memorial Day marathon! Reporting to duty with Sgt. Saunders...

Thanks for the options, RM. What I’VE gotten hooked on are the Gunsmoke episodes on ME TV every day at 1 pm. We talked about that series once. Fantastic stories and acting, though Dennis Weaver is a little irritating as Chester.

“I guess I’m SUPPOSED to be irritatin’, Mr. Dillon.”

Matt and Doc (in unison): “Right, Chester—and YOU ARE!”

Everyone should watch Victory at Sea because it hammers home the point that America's superior production allowed American men to win. Some claim that outsourcing doesn't matter, but if we have to fight China--do they think China will provide the necessary supplies for us to do it? Look up how many ships the Chinese make each year compared to almost none in the US. Think of all the other important things like medicines which we have to buy from China. Hopefully Trump will force production back into the US before it is too late. It takes more than courage and sacrifice to win a war--much equipment is needed or else our people will be slaughtered for nothing.

MARIO ANDRETTI'S GRANDSON,MARCO,ATTEMPTS TO WIN THE INDY 500(WHAT USED TO BE A MEMORIAL DAY SPECTACLE BACK IN THE DAY);BY THE WAY,MARIO(NOW 85) IS DOING WELL

GRA:The Indy 500 was a big race,in 1969,when Mario Andretti won it. Taking place on Memorial Day weekend, Indy was THE race of the year. Back in those days,my not rich neighbors would travel to watch the qualifiers(they asked me to go but I declined),which was all they could afford--race day tickets were too expensive.

I followed racing probably because of them and Andretti winning in 1969 was like Arnold Palmer winning a golf tournament or Dick Weber a bowling championship. Mario never won an Indy 500 again, though remarkably,he captured a Daytona 500 and was a Formula One champion before retiring in the early 1990s.

Today, his grandson Marco is entered in today's Indy--"a one off,"says Mario--and I'll tune in to see how he does. It'll almost seem like 1969 again.

"1969" LASTED FOUR LAPS--ANDRETTI OUT EARLY IN 2025 INDY 500

(Fox)INDIANAPOLIS — A multi-car collision resulted in Marco Andretti’s 2025 Indianapolis 500 ending in the first turn.

Andretti was on the outside of Dreyer and Reinbold Racing teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay and Jack Harvey when Hunter-Reay moved the No. 23 Chevrolet to the right. Harvey was alongside Hunter-Reay and moved in reaction to his teammate, colliding with Andretti.

”I’m fine, just bummed. I wait all year for this and to have it end that early is as frustrating that it gets. If I had a crystal ball, I just would’ve waited, but it’s not really in my nature to do that,” Andretti said. “I had a really good start going and just got crowded at the top. I couldn’t move up anymore and got shoved into the wall.”

The No. 98 Honda spun and hit the wall with the left side of the car before it slid to a stop near the outside wall in Turn 1. Andretti climbed out of the car under his own power.

The 20-year-veteran addressed whether the crash would motivate him to run in the 110th Indianapolis 500.

.
”It would(not be good)to go out like that, wouldn’t it?,” Andretti said.

GRA:Lost interest after that,lol.

You know what I miss about Memorial Day?I just thought of this. Back in the early 70s,when radio was still all music,Memorial Day weekend would always have a top 500 song countdown of all time. I first heard one,I believe, out of KMOX St.Louis at night in about 1970 and local Grand Rapids radio joined in quickly in 1971. This went on until disco started. Starting on Friday afternoon, you'd hear some very obscure songs--many were favorites of mine--and the only time I heard these songs all year."It's Cold Outside","My World Fell Down" were always number 490 or so. Great songs. Then into Saturday,Sunday and Memorial Day and finally the top 100,50,10 songs of all time. I don't remember how the station rated the songs but at the time,"Hey Jude" always seemed to be #1.

Since rock was laid to rest by nig loving record companies,I'd hate to hear a countdown today--it would be mostly rap. But back in 1970-1975,it was a blast to listen to the radio on this particular holiday .
