This retired academic from UC Berkeley lectures a largely retired crowd on immigration. You might want to listen to a bit of it to get a sense of how these folks view reality.

Here is an inadvertent positive she brought to light:

"I was shocked to learn that the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, which is very important in the Department of Homeland Security, to ensure naturalization, and controls immigration, very big, has removed language on its website celebrating the United States as a nation of immigrants. That was in its mission statement since the beginning, and it's now been removed. It also is a result of the gridlock that we have in Congress about immigration policy."

And of course, the White House still spares us from having a Spanish language portal.
