He was a physician /pharmacist .. go figure …One of his sons was Armand Julievich Hammer . Pharmacy pop lived in a two story building in NYC. His apartment was upstairs where he held CP meetings and the ground floor was where the pharmacy was located . Julius Hammer was born in the Ukraine.

His son Armand developed a friendship with V. I. Lenin at the beginning of the Bolshevik revolution. Armand Hammer travelled to the Soviet Union and became a salesman for artwork formerly owned by wealthy Russian families that was confiscated by the Bolsheviks. Armand sold this confiscated art to art dealers in NYC and became wealthy making commissions and sending the rest of the proceeds to the Bolshevik Party central office in Moscow. Sales continued and A.H. became rich until eventually he invested his commissions in the oil business.
