CARBONDALE - Another assault allegedly took place Tuesday on the SIU campus.

A student, who is not currently enrolled at SIU, was reportedly attacked at about 9:30 p.m. by six men on the sidewalk east of the Agriculture building. The suspects, who are not believed to be SIU students, fled the area.

No weapons were involved in the attack and the victim received non-life-threatening injuries.

Each suspect is described as 5 foot, 10 inches to 6 foot tall black men between the ages of 19 and 22. Further descriptions of each suspect have been provided to the SIU Department of Public Safety:

  • The first suspect was wearing dark shorts, a dark hoodie and white shoes.
  • A second suspect had shoulder-length hair, was wearing dark pants, a dark T-shirt and dark shoes.
  • A third suspect wore light-colored pants, a dark hoodie with writing on the front, and dark shoes.
  • A fourth suspect was wearing jeans, a dark-colored shirt with a white logo and a baseball hat.
  • A fifth suspect had shoulder-length hair and wore camouflage pants, a dark shirt, and dark shoes.
  • A sixth suspect wore dark shoes and shirt, with white shoes.

The attack comes on the heels of the arrest of six SIU students in two separate sexual assault incidents and the arrest of two more SIU students in a street fight on South Illinois Avenue over a two-week period in September.

Charges in connection with the sexual assault incidents have yet to be announced by the Jackson County State's Attorney.

The Department of Public Safety said the latest incident is the first aggravated battery reported this semester.

"The Department encourages pedestrians to use the Brightway Path after dark," said Benjamin Newman, Department of Public Safety chief. "The Brightway path has enhanced lighting and is well-marked. In addition, pedestrians should be aware of their surroundings and report suspicious behavior to the police immediately."

Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
