A man and woman were found shot to death early this morning on a sidewalk in Lawrence and police are hunting for at least one suspect, authorities said.

Lawrence Police Chief John Romero said a 26-year-old female and a 29-year-old man died from gunshot wounds outside 4 Bailey St. shortly before 1 a.m. today.

”Two individuals were shot on the sidewalk a couple of feet from each other,” said Romero. “A vehicle nearby was engulfed in flames and a house was also scorched.”

Romero said the fire and murders are linked and he does not believe the slayings are random. A trail of flammable liquid was found spreading from the house to the burned car, he said.

He said investigators have not ruled out a drug motive in the murders.

The slain woman lived at a nearby house on Bailey Street with her family and the man was her boyfriend, Romero said.

“We are looking for at least one shooter in this attack,” said Romero.

Lawrence Police, the Lawrence Fire Department, the state fire marshal’s office and the Essex County District Attorney’s office are investigating the murders.

The names of the victims have not been released yet.
