Ted Rall on Identity Politics

By Baloo

I have to admit that I'm a Ted Rall fan. There are oodles of liberal editorial cartoonists out there, and maybe a dozen or two that you can call conservative or libertarian. But Ted's the only one liberal one I know of who isn't an apparatchik for the Democratic party. He has no more knee-jerk respect for Obama or Hillary than he does for their Republican counterparts.

In this cartoon, he's both right and wrong. He's right inasmuch as the actual conditions for Blacks have hardly improved under Obama, but have actually worsened. That's because he's applying actual observation and reasoning to the question, and Blacks, as a group, do nothing of the kind. He's sort of assuming that Blacks think like everybody else (a liberal fallacy that Ted, alas, falls for.... or does he?), and that they want what is good for them. They don't….

Exactly. NOW it will be that each minority group, so called, will insist that they have "their own" President. Women, gay people, Mexican, disabled, etc. Each must at least be given a shot at the task of the Presidency. And wrong if not given a shot.

Yes, and each subsequent iteration of a president representing a minority group will mouth public platitudes in support of "their" people and make some symbolic gestures in their direction, then proceed to do their job supporting the interests of their parties (i.e. their ultra rich sponsors)and continue to shaft the american middle class. I don't always agree with Ted Rall but he's one of the most clever and funny cartoonists out there and he's willing to tweak PC sacred cows despite following a PC party line for the most part himself.

Here's a link to an article I spotted re Fox and it's coverage of race issues. Predictably the slant of the article is that Fox presenting anything that doesn't whitewash black racism is "racist". I love reading your dissections of these absurd articles so I'm sending the link hoping your interested. Jerry
