The first shot Oswald fired at JFK missed. The Secret Service agent driving the car had been trained to step on the gas and MOVE in such an eventuality. Instead, he slowed down and turned around to look in the back seat. This enabled Oswald to hit JFK with two more shots.
JFK would likely have survived the second shot which hit him in the chest. The driver STILL didn't accelerate and the third shot blew off the top of the president's head.
William Manchester emphasized this in his book. Manchester, a personal friend of JFK's, was angry at the Secret Service.
