The Ukraine’s Complicated History

[“They’re Playing the Hitler Card?! Ukrainian New Yorkers Brace for War, Compare Putin to Hitler (Do They Mean that as a Criticism, or a Compliment?)”]

Some Ukrainians did fight with Hitler, and then fought against Hitler during WWII. Also fought against Stalin during the same conflict. The history of the Ukraine is complicated.

N.S.: You’re tellin’ me! I had been hearing for years of youngish Nazis in the Ukraine, but I may be the last person on Earth to learn—via my family—that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelensky (yeah, I had to look up his full name) is a fellow member of the tribe!

You don't say.

Do you think ignorance of certain, umm, (what some people see as) key facts might be an occasional problem on your end Stix?

After all, the fact that Zelensky is (what some might call, not me of course) a 'rootless cosmopolitan' has been known and discussed in, umm, certain corners of the internet for years now -- as has the suspicion that his 'rootless cosmoplitanism' has played a key role in his coolness (if not hostility) toward Russia as well as his cozying up to the West, including his active lobbying for Ukraine to join NATO, something Russia strongly opposes, and therefore can be reasonably seen as not really in the best national interest of Ukraine.

You may also want to review the key figures involved in the 2nd impeachment of Trump; Ukraine was central to that too -- here's a link to get you started:

Putin talks of drug addicts and Nazi in the Ukraine. There are various milita elements in the Ukraine that are more nationalist than anything else but do take inspiration from WW2 Ukrainian groups that fought with and also against the German during that conflict.

There's a lot of stupid rhetoric from all involved.

What most people don't know is that while Nordstream 2 (a pipeline under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Europe) gets a lot of attention, most Russian gas flows to Europe via pipelines running thru Ukraine -- gas sales are an important way Russia earns hard currency (euros, dollars) -- a friendly Ukraine, not al,igned with the West militarily, is important, even vital to Russia.

Despite its status as a military nuclear superpower, Russia is a 2nd world country that mostly depends on resource extraction, and where as recently as 20 years ago the average life expectancy for men was less than 60 years.

Personally, while I think invading Ukraine was unwise, I don't blame Putin for being angry and frustrated with the status of Ukraine, as well as the behavior of the West, which has treated Russia as a hostile power since the fall of the USSR.

Member states of NATO

Look how NATO expansion has brought in former eastern bloc countries, surrounding Russia with western proxy states.

And speaking of 2nd world countries, most of these new NATO members also qualify -- the last thing they need to be doing is spending lots of money on NATO-compatible military hardware, which they now must do as members of NATO.
