Knoxville: U. of TN Student “Grazed” by a Gunshot While Walking on the Street; Jack McElroy’s Knoxville News Sentinel Aids and Abets Shooter,

Endangers Public Safety, by Censoring Police Description
By Nicholas Stix
Expanded at 7:32 a.m.

Well, Jack, now we know the shooter was black, thanks to your refusal to publish the description the University of Tennessee Police Department gave you.

Thus, we know that the suspect is a black male “about 5 feet, 11 inches with an average build,” who “wore a gray tank top with black stripes.”

If that shooter manages to harm a single hair on a single person’s head, that will be on Jack McElroy’s account.

Some KNS commenters remarked on the newspaper’s contempt for the law-abiding public’s safety, and the decline in safety around the university.

We know the sex of the person who fled the scene, his height and build, and also what he was wearing. Any chance that information regarding his pigmentation could also be provided? For instance, if his color was fluorescent green, that would narrow the search for him considerably, would it not?

If the public's help is needed to catch the bad guy, a complete description is warranted.

This just has to be related to the recent decision by Crystal to close their store on the Strip. UT Students for years have converged on the place in the middle of the night to hawk down little cheap square burgers laden with onions with french fries so laden with saturated fat, you'd think the cow was still there.

You take that action away, and the guns come out.. kinds [N.S.: kids] are ancy [antsy] and got the "shakes" for cheap, late night meal.. Ruby Tuesday and Copper Celler just don't cut it for kids on a tight budget.

Nice to see the area around UT's campus becoming more and more like the area around USC's campus in LA. Keep up the good work Mayor!

Crime in the area is down.

Reader TNRiverCaptain responded to Eviltopia:

“What area is that?”

About that reader from Bizarro World, who asserted, “Crime in the area is down.”

I’m going to take a wild leap, and guess that during my undergrad days (1976-1980), UT students who were just walking on campus at any hour of the day or night were never grazed by bullets, and that UT students who visited friends in Knoxville never got carjacked, kidnapped, gang-raped, sexually tortured and murdered.

Only 10 comments were permitted through in 16 hours, which suggests to me that McElroy’s censors blocked or deleted a bunch of readers.

Thanks a lot, Jack; thanks for nothing.

As WEJB/NSU readers are aware, I know Knoxville fairly well. During 1976-80, I visited many, many times. My brother lived there and I also attended University of Tennessee football games. It was considered safe at that time. Certainly nothing like the Christian-Newsom torture-murders took place. However, rapes were not completely unknown.

When visiting, I would go to the UT library to do research(I'd do this on football Saturdays to kill time). You would see very attractive coeds walking around the campus wearing shorts.

Later during the 90's, there were signs in the library warning students (it was meant for females) to be careful after dark and, if possible, not to walk alone.

You can always see young women on the UT campus who look like Channon Christian, Eve Carson, or Lauren Burk.
