Fort Worth’s Como neighborhood remembers slain immigrant

FORT WORTH -- The front door of Larry’s Grocery & Market was locked, and the store was dark Saturday as residents in the Como neighborhood around Bonnell Avenue and Faron Street remembered Yasir Elsadig.

The 38-year-old Sudanese immigrant died Thursday after being shot Wednesday night by a rifle wielded by one of two masked men.

He was buried Friday after a funeral at Rahma Funeral Home in Richardson.

Monica Welch, who was born in Como and has lived there 49 years, said “Sadi” had been her friend for about 10 years.

“He called the paramedics himself on his Bluetooth,” Welch said. “He said, ‘I’m not even mad at who done it.’ He knew the guys.”

Just about anyone who shopped at the grocery, in the 5000 block of Bonnell, knew Elsadig.

“He was part of the community,” Terena Beavers said.

“If he saw someone messing with your kids he was there for them.”

But Elsadig wasn’t one to force a confrontation.

“If someone came in and got rowdy, he wouldn’t get rough with them,” Brittany Sanders said. “He’d just ask them nicely to calm down. If they didn’t, he wouldn’t push it.”

Elsadig’s sister-in-law, Novella Elsadig, 62, of St. Louis, said he moved to Texas from Sudan about 12 years ago. She said he was a sweet, good-natured man who loved Texas.

“All he did was work and go home,” she said. “He would have never harmed anyone no matter what the circumstance. If he had a dollar, he would give you 50 cents.”

Fort Worth police, who were called to the scene at 8:32 p.m., said Elsadig was walking to his vehicle after his shift Wednesday when two men approached him.

One pointed a rifle at him, there was a struggle over the weapon and Elsadig was shot.

“Some people said that he was closing the store and a man thought he had some money and shot him in the leg,” Sanders said. “They couldn’t stop the bleeding.”

Elsadig’s family suffered another loss not long ago.

“He just got back from his homeland because his dad died,” said Sheree Adams, who said she and her neighbors already miss Elsadig. Several of them created a memorial Friday at the grocery’s front door.

“There was a big poster board with his picture on it, and everybody signed it,” Adams said.

Welch said she and others also placed teddy bears and candles around the door.

By Saturday afternoon, the poster, plush animals and candles were gone. But Elsadig’s friends and customers haven’t stopped talking about him.

“Somebody tried to jack him,” Beavers said.

“He wasn’t disliked by anybody. Sadi and God are the only ones who know who did it.”

All calls are confidential; callers can remain anonymous, and information leading to the apprehension of the suspects will result in a reward.

No, I'm sure they were both college-educated white men, probably attending TCU or at home on break from Harvard or Yale.

Soon we will have the single, brainless Star Telegram reader awaken from their Section 8 bed, get on their government-funded computer, and while normal people are heading off to work, they will rebut posts like yours and mine saying that it is racist to stereotype the suspects because every now and then a white person commits a crime also. They will post a story about some white criminal from a week or a month ago (forgetting there are 6 stories about Africans committing violent crime on today's front page), and yell that everyone is a race baiter. They will hope that the other 99% of readers bite onto this and ignore the overwhelming statistics of their race so life can go on as usual and the next generation believes the myth that Africans have contributed more to our society than they have taken from it.

If not this, then the Star Telegram staff will awaken from the hooka slumber, read our posts, and quickly censor them to insulate the African male from any criticism because they, like the culture the suspects were raised in, support the culturally-aware criminal and not the deceased victims and their family.

Let's see who gets to us first!

Talk about hitting the nail on the head! Wow! And here I thought I was the only one with this perception. Thanks for speaking up. If more people spoke up, instead of "following the tail in front of them" (sheep), perhaps these problems wouldn't be so prevalent. When did we get so introverted??

I'll make an assumption, and I have a 98% chance of being right (based on federal statistics of violent offenders and common knowledge). The suspects are:

young black males, ages 15 to 40, wearing saggy pants, never held a job for more than a year, dropped out of school, use drugs, receive government money and free housing, stole the rifle, have a nice getaway car, favorite music is Rap, hate other races...especially white people who must owe them for something, they have lengthy criminal rap sheets, and they can't tell you who their father is

So start the search now.

The next time the Star-Telegram runs a story about some heinous mass murder, I will expect the usual suspects here to fill the comments page with speculation about the murderer being a white male. Because, statistically, the murderer will probably BE a white male.

...and by the way, I predicted a person like yourself would come along and flip the tables, trying to divert attention from the real problem. Check out one of the first posts where I wrote:
