Sung to “The Singing Nun” song, “Dominique” (1964)

Dumba** nig—his name is ‘K’nique,
He shot a girl named Desiree,
Shot her two times, today.
Not his first,
You’d have to say,
Now they’ll put him far away,
It's too late for Desiree.

This nig, K’nique
He is a freak,
He is a negro, through and through,
And if this coon would be set free, He’d do the same to you.

Dumba** nig—his name is ‘K’nique,
He shot a girl named Desiree,
Shot her two times, today,
Not his first,
You’d have to say,
Now they’ll put him far away,
It’s too late for Desiree.

Mike Miles has some powerful rabbis! Scandal-plagued dallas and colorado schools superintendant is now the scandal-plagued Houston schools superintendant

By N.S.

If Miles is “black,” he’s at most a quadroon. I’ll tell you this, however: He is not noi. If he were, dallas noi thug and councilman, John Wiley Price, would not have condemned him. I guess Miles neglected to grease Wiley’s palm.

If Mike Miles were serious about merit, I’d say, “More power to you!” But he is at the center of a widening corruption scandal involving tens (or is it hundreds?) of millions of dollars.

"youtube removes 35,000 eu videos for 'misinformation,' enhances content censorship ahead of 2024 elections

"youtube has ("voluntarily" or otherwise) assumed the role of a private business entity that "supports elections."

"google's video platform detailed in a blog post how this is supposed to play out, in this instance, in the eu.

"with the european parliament (ep) election just around the corner, youtube set out to present 'an overview of our efforts to help people across europe and beyond find helpful and authoritative election news and information.

"the overview is the usual hodgepodge of reasonable concepts, such as promoting information on how to vote or register for voting, learning about election results, etc., that quickly morph into yet another battle in the 'war on disinformation.

"and what better way to 'support' an election (and by extension, democracy) - than to engage in another round of mass censorship? /s

"but youtube was happy to share that in 2023 alone, it removed 35,000 videos uploaded in the eu, having decided that this content violated the platform's policies, including around what the blog post calls 'certain types of elections misinformation' (raising the logical question if some types of 'election misinformation' might be allowed).
1
"as for who is doing this work, youtube suggests it is a well-oiled machine hard at it around the clock, and 'at scale' - made up of 'global teams of reviewers' and machine learning algorithms.

"the blog post first states that one of the goals of youtube's efforts is to help users 'learn about the issues shaping the debate.' but then in the part of the article that goes into how the platform is 'dealing with harmful content,' it at one point starts to look like the giant might be trying to shape that debate itself.

"'our [N.S.: read counter-intelligence] intelligence desk has also been working for months to get ahead of emerging issues and trends that could affect the eu elections, both on and off youtube,' reads the post.

"in case somebody missed the point, youtube reiterates it: 'this helps our enforcement [!] teams to address these potential trends before they become larger issues.

"and while machine learning (aka, ai) is mentioned as a positive when it comes to powering youtube's ability to censor at scale, later on in the post the obligatory mention is made of ai as a tool potentially dangerous to elections and democracy.

"youtube also states that coordinated influence campaigns are banned on the platform - and promises that this is true 'regardless of the political viewpoints they support.

"and when google's threat analysis group (tag) decides it has spotted such a campaign, this information is shared with law enforcement, including europol.

nazism and the failure of arab modernity
By Richard Hanania

N.S.: Richard Hanania is obviously a bright fellow. However, he has a history of jumping on and off bandwagons. (If you examine his ankles, you'll find his scars.) And so, when as a young man he jumped on the bandwagon of writing honestly on race, he earned himself powerful enemies. He has since recanted his youthful writings, and jumped on a new bandwagon. In a few years, he'll no doubt recant his present positions.

Note: The livestream on X went well last week, so I've decided until further notice to make it a weekly thing, every Thursday at 9ET. If you have a question or something you'd like me to discuss, submit it here.

How ideas matter and the extent to which they do are the kinds of questions that have always fascinated me. Both of my books can be seen as coming down on one side of related debates, taking a stand against "ideaism," or the view that there is a strong and direct connection between what intellectuals write about and what happens in the real world. Yet one should not read them and come to the conclusion that I believe ideas don't matter at all, as my analyses of civil rights law and American foreign policy are largely historically contingent. It is true, however, that the role of ideas as causal forces can, in certain contexts, be exaggerated by intellectuals. And even when we do find cases of ideas seeming to matter, to what extent are intellectuals just channeling mass sentiment or the wishes of concentrated interests in order to achieve power and influence? Think of MAGA populism, which clearly formed as a way to provide an ad hoc justification for Trump's instincts. Meanwhile, in the real world, his political success has overwhelmingly been a result of his personality and status as a celebrity.

When we study the ideas of an intellectual, we are often really studying a wider culture and the kinds of opportunities for status it provides. The ultimate impact of individuals often comes when they serve as focal points around which trends, larger movements, or instincts can coalesce. Marxism at its peak was the governing ideology of states that together ruled about a third of the global population. There are always intellectuals who use ideology as a means to increase their power and status, and there are always masses with base instincts rooted in envy and resentment. The historical role of Marx was to provide the justification for these groups to work together, give them a lingua franca, and be a mascot to which they could all pledge allegiance. Of course, one can't study the lives of Lenin and Stalin without realizing that these men took Marx's ideas very seriously, and it impacted how they behaved. At the same time, it's still very interesting that Mao Tse-Tsung, by some measures the most successful communist of all time, appears never to have read Das Kapital.

There's no single answer to the question of how much ideas matter, as it is going to depend on framing and vary a great deal across societies and different historical epochs. With all that in mind, I've been thinking quite a bit lately about why Arabs in particular seem to always be getting seduced by bad ideas, and how this fact has influenced the development of the Middle East over the last century.

I first came across Hussein Aboubakr Mansour when this tweet of his on sexual assault in Egypt showed up in my timeline (see also the followup. Reminder: X is still a great place to be exposed to new thinkers and ideas!). That led me to his Substack, where I found this fascinating essay called "The Hour of Liberation" on the impact of Nazi Germany on Arab nationalism, which post-World War II became the dominant ideology of the region but today only really exists in zombie form. The thing about the Middle East is that it seems, of all the major regions of the world, to be the one most hostile to classical liberalism. For the last several decades, most of the ideological energy has been on the side of Islamism. The main bulwarks against this poisonous worldview are currently royal despotism, and different groups of fanatics checking one another. But before that, what motivated Arab intellectual elites and mass opinion was a kind of nineteenth century romantic nationalism.

I had always thought that the historical connections to Nazism were accidental, based perhaps on a shared antagonism towards Jews and the British and little else. What Mansour's essay revealed to me is that the relationships and synergies were much deeper. The Syrian Social Nationalist Party, for example, which has a modified swastika as its symbol, is part of the ruling coalition of the Assad regime today. It had a militia that fought in the Syrian civil war before being integrated into the national army in 2019. Arab elites looked to German unification as a kind of model, explicitly rejected individualism, and kept alive a romantic vision of nationalism long after it had died in the West the moment Hitler shot himself in the head [sic; mouth]. One branch of this thought, Baathism, was a completely homegrown ideology, and ended up taking over both Iraq and Syria. These events were among only a few instances where a revolutionary ideology that wasn't originally created in the West (i.e., Marxism) gained control over a state in the post-World War II era.

The ultimate question here to me is why are Arabs prone to accepting and promulgating such bad ideas? Moreover, is there some kind of deep collectivism in the culture that causes it to be horrified by the idea of individual freedom? Is there a biological component to the anti-liberal tendency, perhaps related to a long history of inbreeding? Or is all this historically contingent? Are Arab intellectuals and religious leaders themselves driving this process, or are they just channeling the only kinds of ideas that have any hope of gaining power in the culture they find themselves in? What is the role of Islam in all this, and what are we to make of the massive historical overrepresentation of Christians as Arab nationalist thought leaders? As an Arab who finds classical liberalism to be by far the most compelling political philosophy in human history, there's a personal component to these reflections. And given that we still find Middle East squabbles occasionally dominating American politics, such questions will remain relevant for quite a long time. Regardless, I'm convinced that there is something unique in Arab culture, at least when reinforced by Islam, that makes it particularly unsuited to building functional modern societies. The fact that the region was enamored by romantic nationalism before it fell for Islamism provides strong evidence of that.

With Mansour's permission, I've decided to share his essay here. Since it's paywalled at his own website, I'll only make it available to paid subscribers below too. If you would like to support his work and read more of his essays, you can do so here. I don't get the impression Mansour reaches the same conclusions about the ultimate roots of Arab dysfunction that I do, but I've nonetheless learned a great deal from his writing.

Republishing articles is something I might be willing to do for other Substackers who are producing particularly compelling work. If you're interested in me possibly sharing one of your essays, reach out and let me know.

"This is Berlin; long live the Arabs!" With this catchphrase, Yunis Bahri (1903-1979) opened his first German broadcast on the pan-Arab shortwave radio station on April 7th, 1939. Bahri, a figure who would later be wrapped in so much intrigue and myth, was a well-known Iraqi propagandist and journalist. He served as the primary host of the radio station of King Ghazi of Iraq before the former's death and Bahri's subsequent relocation to Germany in 1938. Described by some as an Iraqi "Lord Haw Haw", Bahri was "bawdy, funny, and exciting". He had a powerful, bombastic voice, proper Arabic pronunciation, and unmatched skill in quick-witted puns and snarky comments. Until the war's end in 1945, the Voice of Berlin would be a sensation in the Middle East, broadcasting religious sermons, political news, and mass calls for armed revolts, all shrouded in the intrigue of Nazism's supreme art of conspiracy theories, antisemitism, and demagoguery. Arab sympathy for Nazi Germany, already at an advanced stage, became an uncontrollable mass phenomenon, and vicious hatred towards Jews, the United States, and Great Britain was firmly inserted into modern Arab mass culture at its birth. Radio Berlin became the first modern mass Arab media medium in the Middle East.

To the Arab audiences, the promises the Voice of Berlin made during the war were simple, "Jews will be driven out of Palestine; the French will be driven out of Syria; the Pasha class will lose power in Egypt in favor of the peasants; Germany will sponsor pan-Arab unity." "All these things are attractive to the Arabs and especially in Iraq." The German propaganda aimed primarily at "creating an atmosphere of distrust regarding the British promises" and providing German promises as alternatives. In Hitler's Directive No. 30, the stated core proposal of the Arabic propaganda campaign was that "a victory for the Axis will bring about the liberation of the countries of the Middle East from the English yoke and thus realize their right to self-determination. Whoever loves Freedom will, therefore, join the front against England." The hatred towards Zionism and the "Jewish menace" was the basic theme of the broadcasts, which included the evils of Jews all over the Middle East and the world, weaving conspiracy theories about the Jews of Iraq, Syria, and Egypt. Furthermore, the Voice of Berlin propagated the myth that world Jewry, the United States, and Great Britain formed together one major league of imperialist domination over the world from which Germany, unleashing its global revolution, would help the Arabs gain national liberation. Bahri was the voice that communicated all of this to Arabs. He read news items, translated Hitler's speeches, offered his commentary, and constantly told fabricated stories of Arab massacres at the hands of the Jews in Palestine and British attempts to mobilize a Jewish army to occupy the Middle East.

Even before the war, for many Arabs, especially in Iraq, Nazism held a mysterious intrigue with its aggressive German Nationalism and the magnetism of Hitler's personality in propaganda. ِAlready in the early 1930s, there were numerous native attempts to translate Mein Kampf into Arabic, sending Arab youth to Germany to participate in Nazi youth events, and banning The Brown Book of the Reichstag Fire and Hitler Terror, a 1933 French communist anti-Nazi polemic, from entering Arab countries. ...

True Confessions and Hidden PC: Kea Fiedler, Part II

"Remembering Kea Fiedler: Disappearing Murder in NY" (Part I).]

By Nicholas Stix
Updated at 1:50 A.M., on tuesday, May 14, 2024

Time was, when a black New Yorker confessed to a murder, if he could answer basic questions about the crime, which other people couldn’t, police and prosecutors took him at his word. However, in 1963, Dets. Edward Bulger and DiPrima allegedly induced a simple-minded black man, George Whitmore, Jr., 19, to make a false confessions to the “career girls” rape-murders of Emily Hoffert and Janice Wylie, 21, committed on August 28, while Martin Luther King Jr. was giving his most famous speech, at the Lincoln Memorial, and to another murder, in Brooklyn.

“Liberals” jumped on the notion not that in certain rare cases innocent blacks were being coerced into confessing to heinous crimes, but insinuated that racist White cops were doing this all the time.

As retired Chicago cop, Martin Preib (Crooked City), likes to say, black criminals love to talk about their crimes.

The “liberals” (socialists/communists/whatever) had no evidence whatsoever to back up their beliefs, but what did they care?

Condemning successful White police detectives has since become a media cottage industry.

The real killer turned out to be a White Puerto Rican convict and junkie, Richard “Ricky” Robles, 22. Liberal TV figures Abby Mann and Joseph Sargent turned the case into the Emmy-Winning Marcus-Nelson Murders TV movie (1972), and the “realistic” TV dramatic series about an ugly, tough, but liberal-to-the-bone NYCPD detective, Lt. Theo Kojak, Kojak. Now there was the demand for believing that heinous, confessed, black criminals were really just “gentle giants.”

(Telly Savalas had become famous playing sadistic psychopaths, especially in John Frankenheimer, Thomas A. Gaddis, and Ken Trosper’s The Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), but he decided he wanted to soften his image. Although Savalas played one last psycho killer in Robert Aldrich, E.M Nathanson, Nunally Johnson and Lukas Heller’s The Dirty Dozen (1967), he had begun the campaign of softening his image in Ken Annakin, Philip Yordan, Milton Sperling and John Melson’s The Battle of the Bulge in 1965, as the tough yet kind tank sergeant, who falls in love with the belgian beauty played by Pier Angeli, who was star-crossed, both in the movie and in real life.)

My recollection is that nobody spoke of Kojak as “liberal,” but this was part of what became a liberal m.o. A media figure would be presented as gruff and non-pc, but this was just a disguise for pc sentiments.

“Judge Judy” Sheindlin is presented as if she were anything but pc, but in reality she is pc to the bone, and she typically immediately makes up her mind whom she likes and whom she’s got it in for. Once, she had a case of a White hispanic woman vs. her White non-hispanic husband, with two homosexuals who lived next door testifying against the husband. They were very proud of having called the police on the normal man, and Sheindlin was very supportive of them. Had they witnessed the husband beating his wife? Not at all. They had allegedly heard him yell at her.

If yelling at one’s spouse is a crime, then most of the married people in America would be in jail.

Another time, a moslem couple was one of the litigants. They claimed to have had a marriage-like ceremony in this country. Sheindlin said nothing negative, in spite of the fact that one was already married, and the ceremony was to avoid committing the crime of bigamy.

A third time, Sheindlin took an immediate dislike to a young White man. When he told his story, which sounded completely plausible to me, she all but called him a liar. In fact, she demanded he lie, saying, “You’d better come up with a better story.” He responded that what he’d said was the truth, and he had no intention of changing his story. She ruled against him, but at least he didn’t let her bully him into lying.

In New York, there has long been a tv “journalist” named “Lionel” (Michael William Lebron) who is pc to the bone, but who has a sarcastic manner, so that he passes as non-pc.

When President Trump was running for office the first time, he once said, “I don’t have time for political correctness.” But of course he has time for it! When he owned the Miss USA and Miss Universe beauty pageants, Trump used to rig the contests through choosing who would sit on the judges’ panels. He hired, for example, obnoxious, stupid, militant homosexualist Perez Hilton, to ensure that no devout Christian White girls ever won. One year, when a Christian girl was a finalist, Hilton viciously harassed the girl. Trump did nothing.

Once Trump won the election for the first time, he sickly pardoned all manner of black drug kingpins, and spoke of a “Platinum Plan” for blacks.

Although in reality, blacks were routinely committing savage, racist rapes and murders against Whites, tv producers and “scholars” turned the reality upside down. As my old friend and partner-in-crime, David in TN has recounted, Winston Moseley, the racist, black murderer-rapist of Kitty Genovese and numerous other White women (he did a dry run against a black woman), was depicted as a White man in a TV movie. In another hoax story about urban indifference, black criminals were bleached White in communist Larry Peerce’s The Incident (1967), which was set in a New York City subway car. Marxist fake scholar, William Ryan, wrote the book-length rant, Blaming the Victim (1972), on behalf of violent, black career criminals.

Over 40 years later, in the fraudulent Ken Burns “documentary,” The Central Park Five, leftwing, fake “social psychologist” Saul Kassin confidently assured viewers that there’s nothing easier than coercing innocent suspects into confessing to crimes.

A street scene from Islamic England

In recent days, I've had requests to write another apocalyptic bestseller so I can do my tedious "As I said ten years ago..." shtick on a whole bunch of other subjects a decade hence. But I'm not sure I have it in me. At this stage, unless you're less sentient than an earthworm, if you don't get what's happening, it's because you choose not to get it.

As millions do. Headline from my old paper, The Daily Telegraph:

Sales of new petrol motorcycles set to be banned from 2040

This is the priority of a supposedly "conservative" government. But don't worry, you'll soon learn to love your new electric vehicle:

Eco-friendly brake cables eaten by foxes after switch to soy insulation

Are "brake cables" really necessary in the coming utopia of "fifteen-minute cities"? I mean, won't the "eco-friendly" vehicles just be built to roll to a standstill should you attempt to shift to third gear?

As noted, this is happening under the Tories. But that doesn't seem to make any difference, does it? Whether you vote for a "right-wing" "fascist" like Theresa May or a leftie wokester like Justin Trudeau, a dinky metrosexual "technocrat" "centrist" like Macron or a dead husk of a moth-eaten sock-puppet like Biden, a coalition of all the respectable parties like Germany or an inability to form any government at all six months after the election like the Netherlands, the general direction of travel is pretty much the same all over the western world. No matter how you might wish to slam on the brakes, the wires were cut years ago. Or possibly chewed through by Bill Gates's genetically modified non-flatulating livestock.

So any new book as proposed by readers is going to be pretty short. Indeed, most of the topics one might wish to broach in such a tome have just been declared taboo in a new "guide" for UK political candidates jointly issued by "conservative" Penny Mordaunt, the famously sword-wielding Lord President of the Privy Council, and her opposite number across the chamber on the Labour benches, Lucy Powell.

This is a curious unanimity for Britain's only two choices of governing party to be proclaiming - especially just a few months before an election. In the old days in self-governing societies, it was taken as read that the trick was to open up "clear blue water" between yourself and your opponents in order to present people with "a choice not an echo". Instead, Ms Mordaunt and Ms Powell's Guide for Members of Parliament and Candidates on Conspiracy Theories demands the political class agree that what's needed in effective democracies is an echo not a choice ...not on anything that matters.

What are we to make of this odd development in the run-up to a supposed watershed election? Just an extreme example of the uniparty consensus? Ah, but the "uniparty" is undoubtedly another of those conspiracy theories, isn't it?

So what else have the "government" and the "opposition" reached complete agreement on? Per The Guardian, the Tory/Labour uniparty Guide to Things Not to Talk About helpfully itemises them:

The Great Replacement
A belief that there is a plan to replace the European white population with minority ethnic groups. Far-right European politicians have repeated the claim, which has also been name-checked by more traditional rightwingers such as the French conservative presidential candidate, Valérie Pécresse.

So don't worry. Everyone who matters in the west assures us that there is no such thing as the "Great Replacement". You can take that to the bank, assuming that Justin hasn't had your account frozen. What a pity this assurance was not passed on to our chum Eva Vlaardingerbroek before she gave her address on the subject in Budapest:

Here it is! The full speech I gave at #CPACHungary that the establishment is losing its absolute mind about.

I spoke the forbidden truth: The Great Replacement is no longer a theory - it's reality. White Europeans are being replaced in their own countries at an ever... pic.twitter.com/L33UE3P6tv

Hmm. Whom to believe? Eva? Or the Mordaunt/Powell pantomime horse of two rear ends? Just three years ago, Tucker and I got into trouble for broaching the topic on Fox:

As CNN would later tut:

Steyn did not object to Carlson's comments.

That's correct, I didn't. Because, when you do it on the scale America and the west are doing it, it's hard to say with a straight face that it's not happening. Pat Buchanan almost a quarter-century ago:

In 1960, only sixteen million Americans did not trace their ancestors to Europe. Today, the number is eighty million. No nation has ever undergone so rapid and radical a transformation.

And that entails certain consequences. Might be great, might be not so ...but such an unprecedented transformation cannot not have consequences. Perhaps that's why our rulers are so insistent that it not be mentioned. CNN calls it "the racist 'great replacement' theory", but, as Eva says, it should be perfectly obvious to anyone taking a stroll around an average western city of any size that it's "no longer a theory - it's reality". Here's me on what turned out to be (although I did not know it) my very last appearance on GB News:

Not bad for a guy twelve hours from a heart attack. And, if that's to be my swan song in UK media, I'll stand by that. As Eva pointed out, the same trends are visible elsewhere - in, say, what Republican sentimentalists still refer to as "Ronald Reagan's California".

But let's stick with London for the moment. I would guarantee that that 36.8 per cent Anglo-Celtic population was an over-estimate then and is even lower now. By way of example, I notice that the native population of the British Isles is so demographically irrelevant to Sadiq Khan's "Great World City" that they are increasingly absent from either side of the proliferating daily horror stories. Just from the last week:

'Samurai sword-wielding killer' Marcus Monzo 'essentially decapitated' schoolboy Daniel Anjorin, 14, during horrific Hainault rampage, court told

"Hainault rampage" is not a phrase the English language has hitherto needed. Mr Monzo is apparently a "dual Spanish-Brazilian national". His poor victim's name, Anjorin, is Nigerian.

From the East End to the terminus of the Northern Line:

Edgware: Fatal stabbing of woman was an isolated incident, say police

Oh, thank goodness for that! The victim was sixty-six-year-old grandmother Anita Mukhey. Her alleged killer is Jalal Debella. Anjorin, Mukhey, Monzo, Debella: In the Great World City, no Anglo-Celts need be involved. Oh, wait, no, sorry...

Bethnal Green: Murder charge after Jack Hague died in stabbing

Mr Hague was fatally stabbed by a chap called Mohammed Ikram Uddin, 24, of no fixed abode.

One more, this time from my mum's country:

Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the sickening gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in a wooded area in Belgium by ten other minors... Reports said the group filmed the attack on their smartphones and posted clips to social media...

Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad said the suspects were 'believed to be young people of immigrant origin'. It added that six of the suspects had been placed in a closed institution, while the other four were placed under house arrest.

Yeah, that'll work. The poor girl was held captive in the "wooded area" for two days to be gang-raped over and over and over. But four of the alleged perps don't get held at all - even though the prosecutor's office professes to be stunned by the gang-rapists' "complete lack of sense of norms".

What "norms"? The point about a multiculti society is that there are no norms; multiculturalism means that your norm is to have no norm. If you import, say, large numbers of Afghans to Norway, what "norm" are young men expected to observe re the Nordic totty perambulating bare-armed and bare-legged? "Oh, golly. I've never seen a woman out of her body bag other than a family member. And now they're everywhere! Amazing how boring female breasts become after the first couple of hundred. Maybe I should try this gay thing so many of the local lads I chat to in the pub over a couple of lagers seem to prefer..."

A society without "norms": good luck with that.

Eva is right. For native European populations, their demographic eclipse will be accompanied by increasing rapes and stabbings and vehicular homicides. And, when they're all gone or converted, whoever's left - Hindu grandmothers, West African schoolboys - will take up the victim slack. And then the diversity will be over, and a new homogeneity will reign.

Because it is not normal for human societies to live like this.

Just to be boringly technocratic about it, unbounded mass migration places huge strains on resources and infrastructure in schools, hospitals, accommodations - in Penny Mordaunt's new England, it means thirtysomethings still living with their parents because they've been priced out of the housing market, etc. But eventually it makes even the very concept of society impossible: how does one adjust one's "norms" to persons from every corner of the earth? what social trust is possible? what would equip one to sense, in the shopping centre or at the bus stop, when yet another "isolated incident" is about to happen?

As I laid out almost twenty years ago now, western Europe is on course to become semi-Islamic in its cultural character - and very quickly. The United States, if it's any consolation, will be more like a giant Latin-American favela. But look at the winning candidate in Gipton and Harehills; he is celebrating his victory not only over the opposition but over your dying country's "norms":

Is he following the Penny Mordaunt guide for political candidates? And what's more likely? That in ten years' time there will be more electoral districts like Gipton & Harehills? Or fewer?

So, under the political "norms" favoured by Ms Mordaunt, it's okay for victorious candidates to shout "Allahu Akbar!" but totally not okay for you to notice it.

remembering Paul Ryan's sabotaging of Trump on immigration

During the Covid hysteria I let my weekly Washington Examiner's pile up.  I've been catching up slowly.

Found this quick summary by Byron York from  a Nov, 2021 column of how Speaker Paul Ryan sabotaged Trump on immigration in 2017 and 2018.  He is quoting from a 2021 book by Jim Jordan Do What You Said You Would Do

REMEMBERING HOW SPEAKER PAUL RYAN BLOCKED FAR-REACHING IMMIGRATION REFORM DURING TRUMP'S FIRST TWO YEARS IN OFFICE ---  WHEN THE GOP CONTROLLED BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS (241 seats in the House) AND THE PRESIDENCY:

BYRON YORK [Washington Examiner, 11-16-21]: "THE GOP FIGHT THAT STOPPED TRUMP'S IMMIGRATION PLAN"

In the 2016 campaign, Donald Trump's highest-profile promise was to build the wall — that is, to construct a barrier along about 1,000 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. Once elected, Trump's best chance to win money from Congress for a wall came in 2018, when Republican Speaker Paul Ryan controlled the House and Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell controlled the Senate.

It didn't happen. Now, one of Trump's strongest supporters on Capitol Hill, Republican Rep. Jim Jordan, is out with a new memoir, Do What You Said You Would Do, out Nov. 23, that describes those months when GOP lawmakers fought over competing visions of immigration reform. The battle was intense, it was passionate, and it came to nothing. No stricter immigration laws were passed, and there was no significant funding for a wall. For that failure, Jordan points the finger of blame straight at then-Speaker Ryan.

"Paul Ryan is not where the American people are," Jordan writes. "Paul Ryan's position on immigration is the same as the positions of the National Chamber of Commerce." In the world of conservative immigration policy activists, accusing someone of siding with the Chamber of Commerce is about as harsh as it gets.

As Jordan tells it, Ryan sabotaged Republican immigration reform by refusing to support a bill that the large majority of Republicans supported, instead pushing a weaker bill that the chamber supported. The result was that, facing united Democratic opposition, neither Republican bill passed.

The bill promoted by Jordan and his colleagues in the House Freedom Caucus would have "ended family-based chain migration apart from spouses and children," Jordan writes. "It contained mandatory E-Verify language for employers and eliminated the visa lottery … [it] also defunded sanctuary cities and appropriated $30 billion for construction of the wall." The bill, Jordan argues, "was consistent with the message of the 2016 election."

The bill supported by Ryan would also have funded the wall, albeit with $25 billion. "But it did nothing else to address the problems we were elected to solve," Jordan writes. "It had no language to address chain migration, E-Verify, or sanctuary cities … [It] also created a renewable six-year legal status for up to 2.4 million illegal immigrants and gave those individuals a path to legal citizenship." Finally, while the bill ended the visa lottery, it "reallocated those visas to amnesty recipients."

"Which bill do you think Speaker Ryan supported?" Jordan asks. "You already know the answer."

Ryan, Jordan charges, did not want to allow the House to vote on the Freedom Caucus bill. He did so only after the group threatened to sink a big, must-pass farm bill if they didn't get a vote on immigration. And then, the speaker declined to put pressure on — whip, as they say on Capitol Hill — any Republicans to vote for it. And still, the conservative bill got 193 votes — a solid majority of the 241 Republicans in the House at that time. Ryan did push for the other bill — what Jordan calls the Chamber of Commerce bill — but in the end, it got only 121 votes.

"Why push for a bill that was one hundred votes short of passing instead of a bill that got 193 votes and therefore was just a few votes shy of passing?" Jordan asks. "You already know why. Paul Ryan doesn't want the legislation President Trump and the American people supported."

The Jordan-Ryan clash was a classic Republican immigration debate. While Democrats are virtually unanimous in support of amnesty and more liberal immigration laws, the GOP is divided between a conservative faction, which favors more restrictive measures, and a business-oriented faction, which favors less restrictive measures and higher levels of immigration. Trump's border wall proposal ran straight into that preexisting conflict.

In the end, Trump found other ways to build some of the wall. By the time he left office and President Joe Biden stopped construction, about 450 miles had been built, most of it replacing existing but dilapidated older barriers. The Republican Congress's failure to fund a wall has had real-life consequences, most recently in the crisis in Del Rio, Texas, when 15,000 illegal border-crossers waded across the Rio Grande and created a squalid migrant camp just inside the United States. The Biden administration allowed thousands of them to stay.

It was a crisis that is sure to be repeated, probably in the near future. But the story might have been different had Republicans not been so divided in that 2018 debate.
