Eric Clapton, “pure blues” man?
From [Eric Clapton’s] Cream days, so many other great songs came out of that group, this is just one. For all Clapton’s “blues purist” posturing, his best songs were ones he composed himself that were not “pure blues” songs.
In his early years, he preferred to be part of something, a sideman rather than being a solo guy. That’s why he had Derek & The Dominos, Cream, Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, and Blind Faith, working with the likes of John Mayall, Duane Allman, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Steve Winwood. When he finally went solo, his material was good but it never matched what he had produced combining his talent with other luminaries. IMHO his early material exceeded even his “pure blues” stuff.

There was another blues guitarist in the mid 60s--Mike Bloomfield. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band is where he started--a famous track is "East-West"--one of the first songs that stretched over 7 minutes.
He did a couple albums with keyboardist Al Kooper that were decent too in the late 60s.
